DFO advises harvesters that the Fixed Gear (Gillnet/Trap) Herring fishery will open in Herring Fishing Areas 5-9 on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at 0600 hours.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-225 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-245 comes into effect on August 29, 2023.

3NO Fixed Gear Atlantic Halibut, Monkfish, Skate and White Hake Closing

DFO advises harvesters that the Atlantic Halibut, Skate, Monkfish and Hake fishery in NAFO divisions 3NO will close on August 29, 2023 at 1600 hours.

This closure is necessary to allow for a review of catches and determine if the amount of Atlantic halibut quota that is remaining is sufficient to permit the continuation of a directed fishery. A further announcement will be made on these fisheries once the review of landings is completed.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Orders 2023-213 and 2023-214 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2023-243 and 2023-244 come into effect on August 29, 2023.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery – Temporary Closure in NAFO Divisions 3KL

DFO advises that the 2J3KL Stewardship cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will close at 1600 hours on Sunday, August 27.
This closure applies to vessel classes A283 and A295.

Consistent with the provisions of the 2023 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) this closure is necessary as landings are approaching the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7,799t) up to September 9.

The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.

The Department will make an announcement at a later date regarding reopening the fishery in 3KL for the fall period for all harvesters (regular season and those who opted for fall only). This reopening will be communicated in advance via a Notice to Fish Harvesters.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery Reminder of 3KL Summer Period

DFO advises that landings for the 2023 2J3KL Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery total 6,717 t for the period up to and including Monday, August 21st.

The Department will continue to monitor this fishery closely to ensure that the total harvest in 3KL remains within the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7,799t) as per the CHP. Should landings approach this maximum authorized harvest prior to the end of the scheduled summer period (September 10), the fishery will close as per the CHP.

An update will be communicated to harvesters by a Notice to Fishers later this week or early next week if necessary.

Soft-Shell Closed Area for Crab in NAFO Division 3L

DFO advises that in accordance with the soft-shell protocol, the following grid in Crab Fishing Area Midshore in NAFO Division 3L will close to fishing Snow Crab at midnight on Thursday, August 24, 2023 due to a high incidence of soft-shell crab:

Grid N25

This grid will be closed to Snow crab fishing for the remainder of the year. Harvesters should note that all gear in this grid must be removed immediately. Gear must be hauled and not reset on your next fishing trip.

Grid N25 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:
47° 10' North, 50° 30' West
47° 00' North, 50° 30' West
47° 00' North, 50° 20' West
47° 10' North, 50° 20' West
47° 10' North, 50° 30' West
