Greenland Halibut (Turbot) Fixed Gear Fishery Opening for <65 ft. Fleet in NAFO Divisions 2+3K

DFO advises harvesters that the less than 65 ft. fixed gear Greenland Halibut (Turbot) fishery in NAFO Divisions 2+3K will open on Sunday, June 15, 2025 at 0600 hours.

Fish Harvesters are required to hail-out to an At Sea Observer Company 24 hours prior to leaving port.

License conditions will be available on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) for those harvesters who submitted an Expression of Interest and are eligible to participate in the NAFO Divisions 2+3K fixed gear Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-081 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-084 comes into effect on June 13, 2025.

Lumpfish Fishery Opening in a portion of NAFO Division 3L

DFO wishes to advise harvesters that the Lumpfish fishery will open at 0600 hours on June 15, 2025 in the following Lumpfish fishing area:

• Waters adjacent to Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove open only to vessel class A438

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

Licence fees and licence conditions are available on the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Orders 2024-318 and 2025-064 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2025-082 and 2025-083 come into effect on June 13, 2025.

Updates to the Fisheries Licensing Policy for Newfoundland and Labrador Region – Vessel and related policies that support Owner-Operator

DFO advises that the Fisheries Licensing Policy for Newfoundland and Labrador Region has been amended to include recommendations stemming from industry engagements on vessels and related policies that support owner-operator.

Effective immediately for the 2025 fishing season, the following changes have been implemented:

• Secondary Vessel Length: The maximum authorized length for secondary vessels has been increased to 39’11” for all enterprises.

• Non-Core Vessel Length: Non-core enterprises may now register primary vessels up to 49’11”, aligning with the length restrictions for core enterprises.

• Vessel Registration Duration: A new flexibility has been introduced for the 12-month vessel registration period, allowing a 30-day grace period in the final month.

These changes will be reflected online soon. Harvesters seeking further details are encouraged to contact their local DFO area office.

DFO advises that the Capelin fixed gear fishery using traps and bar seine (including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine"), for the large vessel fleet (less than 65 feet (19.8m)) in the following areas will open at 0600 hours on June 5, 2025:

Capelin Fishing Area 13

Capelin Fishing Area 14 from Cape Gregory to Point Riche.

Soft-Shell Closed Areas for Crab and Shrimp in NAFO Division 3K

DFO advises that in accordance with the soft-shell protocol, the following grids in Crab Fishing Area 4 in NAFO Division 3K will close to fishing Snow Crab and Northern Shrimp at midnight on Friday, June 6, 2025 due to a high incidence of soft-shell crab:

Grid W 36
Grid X 38
Grid Y 37

These grids will be closed to Snow crab fishing for the remainder of the year. Harvesters should note that all gear in these grids must be removed immediately. Gear must be hauled and not reset on your next fishing trip.

The closure for Northern shrimp is in effect for 60 days, and will re-open on August 5, 2025, if the shrimp fishery is open at that time.

Grid quandrant W 36 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

51° 40' North, 54° 30' West;
51° 40' North, 54° 20' West;
51° 30' North, 54° 20' West;
51° 30' North, 54° 30' West; 
51° 40' North, 54° 30' West;

Grid quandrant X 38 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

51° 30' North, 54° 10' West;
51° 30' North, 54° 00' West;
51° 20' North, 54° 00' West;
51° 20' North, 54° 10' West; 
51° 30' North, 54° 10' West;

Grid quandrant Y 37 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

51° 20' North, 54° 20' West;

51° 10' North, 54° 10' West;
51° 10' North, 54° 20' West; 
51° 20' North, 54° 20' West;

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2024-311 and 2025-053 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2025-074 and 2025-075 will come into force on June 4, 2025.
