DFO advises that the commercial Squid fishery for Jiggers and Traps, in NAFO Division 3K (Squid Fishing Areas 3 and 4) and 3L (Squid Fishing Areas 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) will open 0600 hours on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Licence fees and licence conditions are available through the national online licencing system.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2022-246 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-194 comes into effect on August 5, 2023.

Notice description

DFO advises anglers that due to extremely high water temperatures and/or low water levels, the following rivers in Salmon Fishing Areas (SFA) 9 and 10 will be restricted to morning angling only effective one hour after sunset on Thursday, August 3, 2023.

During this period, angling is permitted from one hour before sunrise to 10:00 am each day and will be closed to angling from 10:01 am to one hour before sunrise on the following day.

The rivers will reopen as conditions improve. Please refer to the 2023 Angler's Guide for further information on the environmental protocol.

3PS COMMERCIAL DIVING FISHERY PILOT PROJECT

DFO advises that the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 11 (Fortune Bay) from Dantzic Point to Point Rosie will open to a commercial harvest of scallop as a continuation of the 2017 pilot project at 0600 hours on August 2, 2023, and will close at 2000 hours on October 20, 2023.

Please note that additional reporting requirements for this fishery include the submission of weekly logs to DFO.

Please submit a request through the National Online Licensing System to indicate your interest and to receive licence conditions.

Soft-Shell Closed Area for Crab and Shrimp in NAFO Division 2J

DFO advises that in accordance with the soft-shell protocol, the following grid in NAFO Division 2J will close to fishing Snow Crab and Northern Shrimp at midnight on Saturday, July 29, 2023 due to a high incidence of soft-shell crab:

Grid D 24

This grid will be closed to Snow crab fishing for the remainder of the year. Harvesters should note that all gear in this grid must be removed immediately. Gear must be hauled and not reset on your next fishing trip.

The closure for Northern shrimp is in effect for 60 days, and will re-open on September 29, 2023, if the shrimp fishery is open at that time.

Grid D24 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

54° 50' North, 56° 30' West
54° 50' North, 56° 20' West
54° 40' North, 56° 20' West
54° 40' North, 56° 30' West

DFO advises that the Capelin fixed gear fishery using traps and bar seine (including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine"), for vessels less than 65 feet, in a portion of Western NL will open at 1400 hours on July 27, 2023.

The specific Capelin quota zone that will open is as follows:

Capelin Fishing Area 14 from the Quebec/Labrador border, north to Cape Charles and west of a line drawn between the following points:

51 degrees 20 minutes North, 56 degrees 57 minutes West, and

51 degrees 57 minutes North, 55 degrees 21 minutes West.
