DFO advises that the Greenland Halibut (Turbot) Inshore Longline Test fishery in NAFO Divisions 3K and 3L will open on September 10, 2023 at 0600 hours for those harvesters who have been issued permits in the following vessel classes:

4RST ATLANTIC HALIBUT OPENING FOR THE NL INSHORE FIXED-GEAR FLEET

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in the September Period, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, September 11, 2023. This fishery is open to Vessel class A287 and will close at 2000 hours on September 24, 2023.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-243 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-249 comes into effect on September 8, 2023.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Reopening in NAFO Divisions 3KL for Fall and Reminder of 3KL Catch and Gear Limits

DFO reminds harvesters that the Stewardship Cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will reopen to harvesters who selected the regular season at 0600 hours on Sunday, September 10, 2023. This reopening applies to vessel classes A283 and A295.

DFO also reminds harvesters that the Stewardship Cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will open to harvesters who selected the fall only fishery option at 0600 hours on Sunday, September 10, 2023. This opening applies to vessel class A296.

Licence conditions for the fall period commencing September 10 will be available soon (for both the regular season and fall only fishery option) via the National Online Licensing System.

As per the Conservation Harvesting Plan, the base authorized bi-weekly limits for the fall period commencing September 10 are:

3KL: Regular Season fishers = 8,500 lbs. base bi-weekly

3KL: Fall Only Option = 17,000 lbs. base bi-weekly

To ensure that the total harvest remains within the maximum authorized harvest, the Department will continue to monitor this fishery closely. There is approximately 2,600t remaining in 3KL. Any changes or adjustments that may need to be made will be communicated in advance to harvesters via a Notice to Fishers.

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that catch limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.

Trout Angling Season Closures

DFO reminds anglers of the following Trout angling season closures:

- Zone 1 (Insular Newfoundland) closed to Trout angling on September 7, 2023. Brown and Rainbow trout angling in selected areas on the Avalon Peninsula and East Coast areas will continue until October 7, 2023.

- Zones 2 and 4 closed to Trout angling on September 7, 2023.

- Zones 3, 5 and 6 closed to Trout angling on September 15, 2023.

- These closures include the Churchill River Drainage Basin Watershed which closes on September 7, 2023 and the Eagle Plateau Management Zone which closes on September 15, 2023.

3Ps - Placentia Bay Commercial Scallop Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay), inside a line drawn from Point Verde (47°14.33'N, 54°00.94'W) on the east side of the bay, to Red Harbour Head (47°16.59'N, 54°58.58'W) on the west side, will open to commercial scallop fishing September 1, 2023, at 0600 hours. DFO reminds harvesters that DMP and hail requirements are mandatory in this fishery. This is in line with the management measures for this fishery.

Salmon Angling Season Closures

DFO reminds anglers of the following Salmon angling season closures:

Insular Newfoundland:

Zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14A will close to Salmon angling on September 7, 2023.

Fall catch and release Salmon angling is permitted on the Lower Humber River, Gander River, and Lower Exploits Rivers from September 8, 2023, to October 7, 2023. Retention of Salmon is not permitted. Catch-and-Release angling as follows:

- main stem of Lower Exploits River, from Stoney Brook to river mouth;

- main stem of Lower Humber River, from Boom Siding (outlet of Deer Lake) to lower end of Shellbird Island;

- main stem of Gander River from outlet on Gander Lake to river mouth.

- Angling not permitted on any tributaries of these rivers;

- Daily catch-and-release bag limit of three Salmon;

Labrador:

Zones 1, 2, and 14B will close to Salmon angling on September 15, 2023.

Anglers are reminded to complete their Salmon Angling Log. Angling log data is an important tool in the stock assessment process. If you purchased a license and did not fish, it is important to let us know. If you did fish please record your daily angling activity as accurately as possible. Check the appropriate box and submit your form.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Reminder of 2J Catch and Gear Limit Changes

DFO would like to remind harvesters fishing in the Northern cod Stewardship Fishery in 2J (Vessel Class A292), that catch limits and gear limits will change on Sunday, September 3rd as per the 2023 Conservation Harvesting Plan for this fishery.

The authorized catch limit will change to a bi-weekly base limit of 40,000 lbs. and the authorized gear limits will also change. Further details on gear and catch limits can be found in the 2023 CHP at: 2023 Conservation harvesting plan (CHP): 2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery

New licence conditions are required and will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

REMINDER - Snow Crab Season Closure For NAFO Division 3LNO

DFO reminds harvesters that the 3LNO Snow Crab fishery will close on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 2000 hours.

All gear must be removed from the water by closing time. The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.
