DFO reminds harvesters that the Herring fixed gear fishery (gillnet, trap, bar seine, including tuck seine) in portions of Herring Fishing Area 14 (Cape St. Gregory to Cape Bauld) will close at 0600 June 15, 2024 and will re-open on August 1, 2024 at 0001 hours.

The portions of Herring Fishing Area 14 that will be closed are:

- Ingornachoix Bay and Hawkes Bay, inside a straight line drawn from Spirity Point to the French shore site.

- Castor's Harbour, inside a straight line drawn from Castor Point to Long Point.

- Ste. Geneveive Bay and St. Barbe Bay inside a straight line drawn from Cape Ste. Geneveive to Anchor Point.

- The area inside a straight line drawn from The Arches to Cliffy Point, and the area within one nautical mile seaward of that line.

- Bonne Bay inside a straight line drawn from Western Head to Lobster Cove Point.

These closures are for the protection of migrating salmon.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-073 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-079 comes into effect on June 12, 2024.

DFO reminds harvesters that the Herring fixed gear fishery (trap, gillnet, bar seine - including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine") in all of Herring Fishing Area 12, and portions of Herring Fishing Area 13 will close at 0600 hours June 15, 2024 and will re-open on August 1, 2024 at 0001 hours.

The areas that are closed are all of Fishing Area 12 (NAFO sub-Division 3Pn) and the following portions of Herring Fishing Area 13:

- That portion near Serpentine River, inside a straight line from Rope Cove, north to Coal River Head and the area within one nautical mile seaward of that line.

- That portion near Fox Island River, inside a straight line from Road Point, north to position 48 degree 43.392 minutes North, 58 degrees 39.634 minutes West and the area within one nautical mile seaward of that line.

- That portion from a line drawn due west of Cape Ray, north to a line drawn due west of Cape St. George.

CAPELIN FIXED GEAR FISHERY OPENING IN AREA 13 AND PORTION OF AREA 14

DFO advises that the Capelin fixed gear fishery using traps and bar seine (including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine"), for the large vessel fleet (less than 65 feet (19.8m)) in the following areas will open at 0600 hours on June 12, 2024:

Capelin Fishing Area 13

Capelin Fishing Area 14 from Cape Gregory to Point Riche.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-293 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-078 comes into effect on June 12, 2024.

Opening Date for 2024 NL Commercial Eel Fishery in Coastal Waters

DFO advises fish harvesters that the opening date for the 2024 NL commercial Eel fishery in coastal waters is June 1, 2024.

Licences and conditions are available through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System and the site location conditions must be obtained from the DFO Detachment offices.

The eel fishery will close on October 31, 2024.

Reminder Atlantic Mackerel Bait Fishery Opening

DFO reminds harvesters in Mackerel Fishing Areas 1 -14, in vessel class A432, the personal use mackerel bait fishery will open at 0600 hours on Monday, May 27, 2024, for the initial 235 t allocation.

Harvesters participating in this personal use mackerel bait fishery are reminded:

• they are restricted to a daily limit of 454 kg (1,000 lbs) to be fished by either gillnet or handline, with only one of these authorized gear types permitted to be onboard the vessel at any one time.

• a mandatory hail-in will be required for all harvesters participating in the mackerel bait fishery. An accurate catch estimate must be provided prior to offloading your catch. Harvesters must hail a trip summary to the Fish Harvesters’ Resource Centre at 1-877-884-7359 / 1-888-562-4511

Harvesters will be notified of closures through a Notice to Fish Harvesters. The second 235 t allocation release will also be conveyed through a Notice to Fish Harvesters with an expected release date in August.

Bait licences will be available to harvesters through the National Online Licensing System

The reopening of the mackerel bait fishery will also provide harvesters the opportunity to collect length frequencies data on a voluntary basis, which can aid to inform the age structure of the stock for future stock assessments. Atlantic Mackerel Bait Fishery Opening

Notice description

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be releasing a total allowable catch of 470 tonnes (t) for the Atlantic mackerel personal-use bait fishery in two equal parts. This will be a competitive fishery and the first release of 235 t will open to harvesters in all four DFO regions in Atlantic Canada and Quebec on Monday May 27, 2024.

For the NL Region in Mackerel Fishing Areas 1 -14 the personal use mackerel bait fishery will open at 0600 hours on Monday May 27, 2024. 

Harvesters participating in this personal use bait fishery are reminded:

•    they will be restricted to a daily limit of 454 kg (1,000 lbs) to be fished by either gillnet or handline,
