DFO advises that the tuck/barr seine herring fishery for NAFO Division 2J (Herring Fishing Areas 1 - 2) will open at 1800 hours on Wednesday, October 04, 2023.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region give notice that Variation Order 2023-245 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-265 comes into effect on October 4, 2023.

DFO advises that the Bluefin Tuna fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KLNOP will open by permit only at 0600 hours on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 for vessels with 2023 Bluefin tuna tag numbers: 3857 and 3919.

Licence conditions will be available through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System for those harvesters who have been contacted.

DFO advises that the mobile gear herring (purse seine) fishery for White Bay (Herring Fishing Area 3) will close at 2000 hours on Sunday, October 1, 2023.

DFO advises that the Unit 2 Redfish fishery will close to the <65' mobile gear fleet based in 4R3Pn, Vessel Classes C405, C406, C422, C437,and C440, on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 2000 hours. The quota for this fleet is expected to be taken by closing time.

DFO reminds the Public that the Newfoundland and Labrador Recreational Groundfish fishery will close for the 2023 season on Sunday, October 1, 2023, one hour before sunset.

DFO advises harvesters that the Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery in NAFO Division 2J will close on Sunday, October 1st at 1800 hours to all vessel classes.

The Department has been closely monitoring landings in 2J and we anticipate that the Maximum Authorised Harvest will be reached at this time.

The Department prioritizes safety at sea. If a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in Period 5, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, October 2, 2023. This fishery is open to vessel class A293 and will close at 2000 hours on October 22, 2023.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-117 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-258 comes into effect at 1600 hours on September 25, 2023.

DFO advises that the Scallop fishery in the 3Ps North Bed in Scallop Fishing Area (SFA) 11 will open for a limited period from 1800 hours on Saturday, September 23, 2023, to 1800 hours on Friday October 6, 2023.

Please note that NEW Conditions of Licence (COLs) will be issued to those harvesters deemed eligible.

The North Bed is defined as that portion of Scallop Fishing Area 11, bounded by a line connecting the following coordinates:

46 degrees 30.0 minutes North latitude, 57 degrees 28 minutes West longitude to
46 degrees 30.0 minutes North latitude, 56 degrees 46 minutes West longitude along the Canada/France boundary to
46 degrees 23.0 minutes North latitude, 56 degrees 29 minutes West longitude to
46 degrees 14.0 minutes North latitude, 56 degrees 29 minutes West longitude to
46 degrees 14.0 minutes North latitude, 57 degrees 28 minutes West longitude to
46 degrees 30.0 minutes North latitude, 57 degrees 28 minutes West longitude.

A Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) or Observer coverage is required to fish in the North Bed scallop area.

Fish harvesters are reminded that fishing is not permitted in the Middle Bed, Southern Bed, or the Core Area. These areas are defined in your licence conditions.
