DFO advises that the fixed gear Greenland Halibut (Turbot) Fishery in NAFO Divisions 3LMNO will close for all vessels less than 65 ft on November 17, 2023 at 1800 hours.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-255 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-280 comes into effect on November 17, 2023.

Molluscan Shellfish Harvesting Reopening - South Coast – Bay d’Espoir

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public of the re-opening for the harvesting of all bivalve shellfish including Arctic wedge calms, Atlantic razor clams, Atlantic surf clams, bay quahaugs, northern propeller clams, ocean quahaugs, softshell clam, Stimpson's surf clams, bay mussels, blue mussel, horse mussels, American oysters, bay scallops, Iceland scallops, purple hinge rock scallop, (except sea scallops), northern moon snails, waved whelks, and Stimpson's whelks for recreational or commercial purposes in the following areas effective 1800 hours on November 14, 2023:

From Grey River Point (at Lat 47.57204 Long -57.11771), Southeast to a point at Lat 47.17014 Long -55.7676, and then Northeast to a point at Friar Head (at Lat 47.58513 Long -55.07872).

COD FISHERY CLOSING IN NAFO SUBDIVISION 3Ps (d) and (e)

DFO advises fish harvesters that the cod fishery in NAFO Subdivision 3Ps(d) and (e) will close on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 1800 hours in accordance with the Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) and is related to the mixing of cod from 4RS3Pn. This closure affects all vessel classes.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-261 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-279 comes into effect on November 15, 2023.

COD FISHERY CLOSING IN NAFO SUBDIVISION 3Ps (a)

DFO advises fish harvesters that the commercial cod fishery in NAFO Subdivision 3Ps(a) will close on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 1800 hours for harvesters with a homeport outside Division 3Ps(a) and (b).

Please note that 3Ps (a) will open for eligible fish harvesters with a homeport in 3Ps (a) or (b) at 0600 hours on November 16, 2023. 

Those fish harvesters with a homeport in 3Ps (a) or (b), wishing to direct for cod in 3Ps (a) are advised that amended licence conditions will be required. This applies to fixed-gear vessels less than 65 feet with Vessel Class A290. To receive these licence conditions, please make a request through the National Online Licensing System.

4RST ATLANTIC HALIBUT – SIXTH SEASONAL OPENING DATE FOR THE NL INSHORE FIXED-GEAR FLEET

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in Period 6, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, November 13, 2023. This fishery is open to vessel class A431 and will close at 2000 hours on December 17, 2023.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-276 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-278 comes into effect on November 11, 2023.

Directed Atlantic Halibut Fishery for the Inshore Fixed-Gear Fleet Closing in 3Ps

DFO advises that the directed Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will close for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet using longlines at 1800 hours on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, as the quota is expected to be taken. There will be no Atlantic halibut bycatch permitted after this time. 

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-267 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-276 comes into effect on November 7, 2023.

Additional Landing Ports for the greater than 65’ Herring Purse Seine Fleet in NAFO Division 4R

DFO advises harvesters in the greater than 65’ herring purse seine fleet that the following additional landing ports have been approved:

1.    Port aux Choix 
2.    Flowers Cove 
3.    Cooks Harbour
4.    Benoit’s Cove
5.    Port Harmon

New licence conditions are required and will be available through NOLS. 

Fish harvesters are now required to contact the Area Chief, Conservation and Protection, Fisheries and Oceans Canada via email 12 hours prior to any fishing activities taking place. Additional information is outlined in licence conditions.
