2022-23 INTERIM TAC FOR ATLANTIC HALIBUT AND GREENLAND HALIBUT IN THE GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announces an interim Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for the Atlantic halibut and Greenland halibut fisheries in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Divisions 4RST.

4RST Atlantic halibut

An interim TAC of 858 t for Atlantic halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final fleet allocations will be provided.

4RST Greenland Halibut

An interim TAC of 1,519 t for Greenland halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final allocations will be provided.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announces an interim Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for the Atlantic halibut and Greenland halibut fisheries in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Divisions 4RST.

4RST Atlantic halibut

An interim TAC of 858 t for Atlantic halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final fleet allocations will be provided.

4RST Greenland Halibut

An interim TAC of 1,519 t for Greenland halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final allocations will be provided.

2022 Atlantic Salmon Recreational Fishery

DFO reminds anglers that 2022 is the second year of a the two year management approach for the Atlantic Salmon recreational fishery.  

Management measures include: 

- Season Dates: Insular Newfoundland - June 1 to September 7 & Labrador - June 15 to September 15

- Anglers will be permitted to retain a total of two salmon with a maximum of one salmon on Class 2 rivers. 

- A catch and release limit of three fish per day for all scheduled rivers in Newfoundland and Labrador with the exception of Class 0 rivers. On Class 0 rivers anglers are permitted to catch and release a limit of two fish per day.

- The retention of salmon on non-scheduled waters is not permitted.

- The continuation of the multi-faceted Environmental Protocol.

Trout Season Opening in Insular Newfoundland

DFO advises that the 2022 summer trout season for Zone 1 (insular Newfoundland) opens on May 15, 2022, and will remain open until September 7, 2022.

Special trout management areas opening on June 1 include Southwest Pond, Otter Pond, Coaker's Steady, Adies Lake, 10 Mile Lake (Northern Peninsula) and Round Lake (Northern Peninsula).

Bag limits and possession limits for insular Newfoundland remain the same: daily bag limit for trout (includes speckled trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and ouananiche) is 12 trout or 2.25 kg + 1 trout, round weight (which can be a combination of any of the species - speckled, brown, rainbow, ouananiche); possession limit is twice the daily bag limit.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2021-255, 2021-256, 2021-258, and 2021-264 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2022-050, 2022-051, 2022-052, and 2022-053 come into effect on May 12, 2022.

2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut opening

DFO advises that the 2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery will open at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 15th, 2022 for vessel class C175 and closes on May 29, 2022.

Conditions of license are available through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

As per your 2022 conditions of license, a daily hail is required. Hails must be sent to Hails65@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

3Ps CORE AREA SCALLOP FISHERY OPENING

DFO advises that the 3Ps Scallop fishery in the Core Area will open at 0600 hours on May 11, 2022.

Access to the Core Area is only available by trip permit for historical harvesters. If you meet the criteria and you are interested in fishing in the Core area in 2022, please contact DFO through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) to request access and an application for a permit. Those seeking access will be reviewed against policy, before determining whether they will be granted access.

The Core Area is defined as that portion of Scallop Fishing Area 11 bounded by a line connecting the following coordinates:

46 degrees 52.7 minutes North latitude, 57 degrees 28 minutes West longitude to

46 degrees 52.7 minutes North latitude, 56 degrees 29 minutes West longitude to

46 degrees 30.0 minutes North latitude, 56 degrees 29 minutes West longitude to

46 degrees 30.0 minutes North latitude, 57 degrees 28 minutes West longitude to

46 degrees 52.7 minutes North latitude, 57 degrees 28 minutes West longitude.

Fish harvesters are reminded that they must have at-sea observer coverage services arranged before commencing fishing.

ATLANTIC HALIBUT FISHERY REOPENING IN SUB-DIVISION 3Pn

DFO advises that the Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will reopen at 0600 hours on May 11, 2022.

DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the incidental catch of Cod exceeds the established protocols.

DFO wishes to advise harvesters of the following 3K Lumpfish area opening and closing dates: 

Little Harbour Deep Head to Cape St. John: May 15, 2022 - July 3, 2022

Cape St. John to North Head: May 15, 2022 - July 3, 2022

North Head to Cape Freels: May 28, 2022 - July 16, 2022

Note all opening times are 0600 hours, and closing times are 2000 hours.

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

Harvesters are reminded that licence conditions are available through the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).
