DFO advises that the commercial Scallop fishery in Area 9 (Inner St. Mary's Bay) in NAFO Division 3L will close at 1800 hours on Friday, April 29, 2022.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-036 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-041 comes into effect at 1800 hours on April 29, 2022.

LOBSTER FISHING OPENING IN 4R

DFO advises of the following 4R lobster area opening and closing dates:

Note all opening times are 0600 hours and all closing times are 2000 hours.

- LFA 14A (Cape St. Gregory to Point Riche): May 3, 2022 to June 30, 2022;

- LFA 14C (Big Brook to Cape Bauld) May 18, 2022 to July 15, 2022.

Harvesters are reminded that they are not permitted to retrieve fishing gear or possess lobsters during the initial 48 hour gear-setting period after the opening date.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-038 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-040 comes into effect on April 29, 2022.

Atlantic Halibut Fishery Closing in NAFO Sub-Division 3Pn

Atlantic Halibut Fishery for the Inshore Fixed-Gear Fleet in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps

DFO advises that the directed fishery for Atlantic halibut in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will open to the inshore fixed - gear  fleet (fixed-gear vessels less than 65 feet - Vessel Classes A251, A254, A257, A260, A263, A266, A269, A272, A275, and A279) at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 1, 2022. 

Participants in this fishery will be authorized to fish in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps, including east of Boxey Point and in water depths less than 50 fathoms, and will have weekly catch limits for Atlantic halibut. Provisions for this fishery are outlined in the species-specific and Groundfish General Licence Conditions, which are available through the National Online Licencing System (NOLS). 

Harvesters are reminded that as outlined in their conditions of licence, all cod caught, whether from directed catch or by-catch, will be charged against the harvester's Individual Quota (IQ) or harvesting cap for their licence in 3Ps. Once a harvester has caught their cod IQ or harvesting cap, whether it is from directed fishing or as by-catch, the harvester must cease fishing for all species of groundfish in 3Ps for the remainder of the year. 

Inshore fixed-gear harvesters are further reminded that as per conditions of licence, the daily by-catch limit of cod when directing for Atlantic halibut in 3Ps is limited to 10 per cent or 200 pounds round weight, whichever is greater. DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the by-catch of cod exceeds the established protocols.

DFO will closely monitor catches from this fishery. Once the available fleet allocation of Atlantic halibut is reached, the fishery will close to the inshore fixed-gear fleet and further retention of Atlantic halibut, including as bycatch in other fisheries, will be prohibited.

- LFA 4A (Notre Dame Bay West): May 28, 2022 to July 15, 2022;

- LFA 4B (Notre Dame Bay East): May 14, 2022 to July 10, 2022.

Harvesters are reminded that they are not permitted to retrieve fishing gear or possess lobsters during the initial 48 hour gear-setting period after the opening date; as well LFA 4A and 4B conditions prohibit gear retrieval between 2100 hours (9 p.m.) on Saturday and 0500 hours (5 a.m.) on Monday.

Harvesters are also reminded they are permitted to harvest bait for the lobster fishery as per the conditions of their bait licence.

- LFA 11 West (West of Western Head, Hare Bay): April 30, 2022 to July 2, 2022;

- LFA 10:Placentia Bay: April 30, 2022 to July 9, 2022; 

Harvesters are reminded that they are not permitted to retrieve fishing gear or possess lobsters during the initial 48 hour gear-setting period after the opening date; as well LFA 10 conditions prohibit gear retrieval between 2100 hours (9 p.m.) on Saturday and 0500 hours (5 a.m.) on Monday.

Harvesters are also reminded they are permitted to harvest bait for the lobster fishery as per the conditions of their bait licence.

3Ps FIXED GEAR HERRING OPENING - PASS ISLAND TO CINQ CERF

DFO advises that the herring fishery for fishing vessels using gillnets and trap nets in Herring Fishing Area 11 from Pass Island to Cinq Cerf will open at 0600 hours on Monday, April 25, 2022.

Please note that the Barr Seine fishery for this area is not open.

Fish harvesters are advised that dockside monitoring is a requirement in this fishery. 

Licence conditions are available through the National Online Licencing System.

3Ps SCALLOP FISHERY OPENING

DFO advises 3Ps scallop harvesters that the Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay) and Scallop Fishing Area 11 (Fortune Bay) will open to the >40' fleet at 0600 hours on April 23, 2022.

Fish harvesters are reminded that fishing is not permitted in the middle bed, southern bed, Core Area and the North Bed. These areas are defined in your licence conditions.

The Core Area (Iceland scallop) and North Bed (Sea scallop) fisheries will open at a later date. Permits are required to fish these areas when open.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-003 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-036 comes into effect on April 23, 2022.
