DFO advises that the fixed gear herring (gillnet/trap) fisheries for White Bay, Notre Dame Bay (Herring Fishing Areas 3 and 4) will open at 0600 hours on Saturday, April 1, 2023.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-012 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-015 comes into effect on April 1, 2023.

DFO advises that the fixed gear herring (bar/tuck seine) and (gillnet/trap) fisheries for Bonavista Bay, Trinity Bay, Conception Bay, the Southern Avalon and St. Mary’s Bay, (Herring Fishing Areas 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) will open at 0600 hours on Saturday, April 1, 2023.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-012 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-015 comes into effect on April 1, 2023.

DFO advises that the Herring purse seine fishery, for the greater than and less than 65’ mobile gear fleet in Herring Fishing Area 13 and 14, will open 0600 hours, April 1, 2023.

The Small Fish Protocol approved and implemented for both fleets will continue for the remainder of this management cycle ending March 31, 2024.

Seal Fishery Re-Opening - April 6, 2023

DFO advises Newfoundland and Labrador Seal harvesters that the Commercial and Personal Use Seal fishery will re-open in Sealing Areas 4 to 23 and Sealing Areas 25 to 27 at 0600 hours on April 6, 2023.

Commercial Seal harvesters based in the Front have access to the Gulf and commercial Seal harvesters based in the Gulf have access to the Front.

Commercial Seal harvesters are advised to check with their buyers to confirm a market for their Seals before going Sealing.

Seal harvesters are reminded that licences and licence conditions are available through DFO's National Online Licencing System.

Additionally, all Commercial and Personal Use Sealers are reminded that landings must be hailed in daily, as per licence conditions.

Unit 2 Redfish Fishery Closing for all Fleets

DFO advises that the Unit 2 Redfish Fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will close for all fleets at 2359 hours Friday March 31, 2023.

This closure is consistent with the Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) for this fishery.

Fish harvesters are reminded that all fishing gear must be removed from the water prior to the closure.
