Fixed Gear Capelin Fishery Opening In Portions of White Bay and Notre Dame Bay

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will open on July 16, 2025 at 0600 hours in the following areas:

White Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 3)
• Cape Bauld to Fischot Island
and 
Notre Dame Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 4)
• Dog Bay Point to Cape Freels.

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed Gear.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2025-130 has been revoked, and Variation Order 2025-136 comes into effect on July 16, 2025.

Salmon River Closures in Salmon Fishing Areas 4, 5, 6, and 13

DFO advises anglers that due to extremely high water temperatures and/or low water levels, the following rivers in Salmon Fishing Areas (SFA) 4, 5, 6, and 13 will be restricted to morning angling only, effective one hour after sunset on July 15, 2025.

During this period, angling is permitted from one hour before sunrise to 10:00 am each day and will be closed to angling from 10:01 am to one hour before sunrise on the following day.

The rivers will reopen as conditions improve. Please refer to the 2025 Angler's Guide for further information on the environmental protocol.

Reminder Bait Season for Herring Closing in HFA 3 to 11

DFO reminds harvesters that the Bait Season for herring in Herring Fishing Areas 3 to 10 and that portion of Herring Fishing Area 11 from Point Crewe to Western Head, Hare Bay is closed from July 15 to August 15, 2025.

Soft-Shell Closed Areas for Crab in NAFO Division 3NO

DFO advises that in accordance with the soft-shell protocol, the following grids in Crab Fishing 3N 200 in NAFO Division 3NO will close to fishing Snow Crab at midnight on Thursday, July 17, 2025 due to a high incidence of soft-shell crab:

Grid V 37
Grid V 38
Grid W 37

This grid will be closed to Snow crab fishing for the remainder of the year. Harvesters should note that all gear in these grids must be hauled and removed immediately, resetting of gear is not permitted.

Grid quandrant V 37 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

45° 50' North, 48° 30' West;
45° 40' North, 48° 30' West;
45° 40' North, 48° 20' West;
45° 50' North, 48° 20' West; 
45° 50' North, 48° 30' West;

Grid quandrant V 38 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

45° 50' North, 48° 20' West;
45° 40' North, 48° 20' West;
45° 40' North, 48° 10' West;
45° 50' North, 48° 10' West; 
45° 50' North, 48° 20' West;

Grid quandrant W 37 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will reopen on July 15, 2025 at 0600 hours and close on July 15, 2025 at 2200 hours in Trinity Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 6).

Harvesters are reminded there is a change in daily trip limits. New license conditions will be available on NOLS and will be required for this fishery.
