Fixed Gear Capelin Fishery Opening By Permit Only in Conception Bay

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will open by permit only on July 11, 2025 at 0600 hours and close on July 13, 2025 at 2200 hours in Conception Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 7).

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO's National On-line Licencing System for those harvesters who have been contacted for the above date.

Opening of 2J3KL Northern Cod Fishery for Inshore Fixed-Gear Harvesters

DFO advises that the 2J3KL Northern cod fishery will open for 2J-based and 3KL-based inshore fixed-gear harvesters on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at 0600 hours for vessel classes A283, A292 and A295. 

Licence conditions will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

For fish harvesters that have acquired additional cod shares through enterprise combining, adjusted catch limits will be identified in their licence conditions. Harvesters are reminded that fishing gear cannot be set prior to the season opening.

Should in-season adjustments to catch limits or seasons be required, industry will be consulted and updates will be communicated to harvesters via a Notice to Fishers. 

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2025-083 and 2025-099 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2025-118 and 2025-119 come into effect on July 11, 2025.

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will close on July 9, 2025 at 22:00 hours in Conception Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 7).

Pending landing assessment, a reopening may be announced. Harvesters are advised to closely monitor Notice to Fishers for information.

CORRECTION: Salmon River Closure in Salmon Fishing Area 13

DFO advises anglers that due to extremely high water temperatures and/or low water levels, the following river in Salmon Fishing Area (SFA) 13 will be restricted to morning angling only, effective one hour after sunset on July 8, 2025.

During this period, angling is permitted from one hour before sunrise to 10:00 am each day and will be closed to angling from 10:01 am to one hour before sunrise on the following day.

The rivers will reopen as conditions improve. Please refer to the 2025 Angler's Guide for further information on the environmental protocol.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2025-067, 2025-068, 2025-069, 2025-070, and 2025-071 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2025-110, 2025-111, 2025-112, 2025-113 and 2025-114 will come into effect at 1800 hours on July 8, 2025.

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will open on July 9, 2025, at 0600 hours in Bonavista Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 5).

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed gear.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO's National On-line Licencing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2025-108 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-115 comes into effect on July 9, 2025.

Reminder: Inshore Fixed-Gear Northern Cod Buddy-up Application Available

DFO wishes to remind inshore fixed-gear Northern cod harvesters that Buddy-Up will be authorized for the 2025 season. The 2025 Buddy-up Application is available through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

The inshore fixed-gear Northern cod Buddy-Up application can be downloaded and submitted by following Step-By-Step Instructions through NOLS: Submitting a Request and Checking the Request Status: Step-by-Step.

Any harvesters experiencing issues with accessing their online NOLS account, should contact the NOLS Support Line 1-877-535-7307 to have the issue resolved. For more information on the Buddy-Up policy for Northern cod, please contact your local Area Office detachment.
