The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2025-217, 2025-218, 2025-219, 2025-220 and 2025-221 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2025-222, 2025-223, 2025-224, 2025-225 and 2025-226 will come into effect at 1800 hours on August 28, 2025.

3Ps - Placentia Bay Commercial Scallop Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay), inside a line drawn from Point Verde (47°14.33'N, 54°00.94'W) on the east side of the bay, to Red Harbour Head (47°16.59'N, 54°58.58'W) on the west side, will open to commercial scallop fishing September 1, 2025, at 0600 hours. 

DFO reminds harvesters that DMP and hail requirements are mandatory in this fishery. This is in line with the management measures for this fishery.

Emerging 3LNO Sea Cucumber Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the Emerging Sea Cucumber fishery in NAFO Divisions 3LNO will open at 0600 hours on Thursday, August 28, 2025 to permit holders.

License conditions will become available in the DFO National Online Licensing System (NOLS) in advance of the planned fishing dates submitted by permit-holders.

Permit holders are also reminded that completion of assigned survey blocks is a condition of licence, and that 100% at-sea observer coverage is also required.

Changes to the Northern Cod Inshore Fishery Catch and Gear limits for Regular Season 3KL-based Fixed-Gear Harvesters

DFO advises that the catch and gear limits for regular season 3KL-based inshore fixed-gear harvesters (vessel classes A295 and A283) will change effective August 31, 2025, as follows:

The authorized catch limits (in round weight) for 3KL-based inshore fixed-gear harvesters are:
-    August 31 – September 13: 17,000 lbs. bi-weekly base limit

Updated gear limits will be detailed within the new licence conditions. New licence conditions are required and will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that catch limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.

3Ps Sea Cucumber Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the Sea Cucumber fishery in NAFO Sub-division 3Ps for both the Western and the Eastern beds will open at 0600 hours on August 27, 2025.

Due to extenuating circumstances in this season’s Sea cucumber fishery, and in response to a request from industry, buddy up arrangements will be authorized in this year’s fishery. This is a temporary measure for 2025, limited to the individual bed being fished. Harvesters interested in requesting a buddy up arrangement may submit individual requests via NOLS, clearly outlining the nature of your request.

Atlantic Halibut Fishery for the Inshore Fixed-Gear Fleet Closing in 3Ps

DFO advises that the directed Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will close for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet using longlines at 2000 hours on August 27, 2025, as the quota is expected to be taken. There will be no Atlantic halibut bycatch permitted after this time.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2025-202 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-215 comes into effect on August 26, 2025.
