DFO advises the 4R portion of the Unit 1 Redfish fishery (vessels less than 65 feet) will open to NL based harvesters with Reserve Allocation for vessel classes C434, C439 and C464. The fishery will open at 0600 hours on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region give notice that Variation Order 2025-250 has been revoked, and Variation Order 2025-252 comes into force on October 25, 2025.

DFO advises that the Herring fixed gear fishery (trap, gillnet, bar seine - including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine") in all of Herring Fishing Area 14 will close at 1200 hours October 25, 2025.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-248 has been revoked, and Variation Order 2025-251 will come into force on October 25, 2025.

Ghost Gear Survey

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is conducting research to better understand the impacts of abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), commonly referred to as Ghost Gear, on commercial fish stocks and the environment. DFO has developed an anonymous survey to better understand the types of fishing gear commonly lost, the causes of loss, and the practices used to avoid loss.
