DFO advises that the Fixed Gear (Bar/Tuck Seine) Herring fishery will open on August 31, 2024 at 0600 hours in White Bay (Herring Fishing Area 3).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-210 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-242 comes into effect on August 31, 2024.

Salmon Angling Season Closures

DFO reminds anglers of the following Salmon angling season closures:

Insular Newfoundland:

Zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14A will close to Salmon angling on September 7, 2024.

Fall catch and release Salmon angling is permitted on the Lower Humber River, Gander River, and Lower Exploits Rivers from September 8, 2024, to October 7, 2024. Retention of Salmon is not permitted. Catch-and-Release angling as follows:

- main stem of Lower Exploits River, from Stoney Brook to river mouth;

- main stem of Lower Humber River, from Boom Siding (outlet of Deer Lake) to lower end of Shellbird Island;

- main stem of Gander River from outlet on Gander Lake to river mouth.

- Angling not permitted on any tributaries of these rivers;

- Daily catch-and-release bag limit of three Salmon;

Labrador:

Zones 1, 2, and 14B will close to Salmon angling on September 15, 2024.

Anglers are reminded to complete their Salmon Angling Log. Angling log data is an important tool in the stock assessment process. If you purchased a license and did not fish, it is important to let us know. If you did fish please record your daily angling activity as accurately as possible. Check the appropriate box and submit your form.

Trout Angling Season Closures

DFO reminds anglers of the following Trout angling season closures:

- Zone 1 (Insular Newfoundland) closed to Trout angling on September 7, 2024. Brown and Rainbow trout angling in selected areas on the Avalon Peninsula and East Coast areas will continue until October 7, 2024.

- Zones 2 and 4 closed to Trout angling on September 7, 2024.

- Zones 3, 5 and 6 closed to Trout angling on September 15, 2024.

- These closures include the Churchill River Drainage Basin Watershed which closes on September 7, 2024 and the Eagle Plateau Management Zone which closes on September 15, 2024.

Update to 2J3KL Northern Cod Fishery - Reminder of 2J-based Catch and Gear Limit Changes

The Department is aware that some 2J-based inshore Northern Cod harvesters have experienced issues regarding their licence conditions for the updated catch and gear limits via the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

New 2J-based licence conditions are required and will be available after 9:00pm today, August 30, 2024 on NOLS. Please be advised that you must download and print these conditions prior to Sunday, September 1, 2024.

3Ps - Placentia Bay Commercial Scallop Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay), inside a line drawn from Point Verde (47°14.33'N, 54°00.94'W) on the east side of the bay, to Red Harbour Head (47°16.59'N, 54°58.58'W) on the west side, will open to commercial scallop fishing September 1, 2024, at 0600 hours. DFO reminds harvesters that DMP and hail requirements are mandatory in this fishery. This is in line with the management measures for this fishery.

2J3KL Northern Cod Fishery - Reminder of 2J-based Catch and Gear Limit Changes

DFO reminds 2J-based harvesters fishing in the Northern cod fishery (Vessel Class A292) that catch limits and gear limits will change on Sunday, September 1st as per the 2024 Conservation Harvesting Plan for this fishery. 

The authorized catch limit will change to a bi-weekly base limit of 45,000 lbs. and the authorized gear limits will also change. Further details on gear and catch limits can be found in the 2024 CHP: 2024 Conservation harvesting plan (CHP) - 2J3KL Northern Cod Fishery: Inshore Fleet

New licence conditions are required and will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that catch limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.
