Fixed Gear (Gillnet and Trap) Herring Fishery Opening in NAFO Division 3KL (HFA 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9)

DFO advises that the Herring fixed gear fishery for Gillnet and Trap will open 0600 hours Thursday, April 11, 2024, for the following:

- Herring Fishing Area 3- White Bay 
- Herring Fishing Area 4- Notre Dame Bay
- Herring Fishing Area 5- Bonavista Bay 
- Herring Fishing Area 6- Trinity Bay 
- Herring Fishing Area 7- Conception Bay 
- Herring Fishing Area 8- Southern Shore 
- Herring Fishing Area 9- St. Mary’s Bay 

Fish harvesters are reminded that logbooks are mandatory in these Fixed Gear herring fisheries.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-015 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-022 comes into effect on April 10, 2024.

Atlantic Halibut Fishery Closing in NAFO Sub-Division 3Pn

DFO advises that the Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will close at 1200 hours April 10, 2024 due to incidental catch of Cod exceeding the established protocols.

2024 SNOW CRAB SEASON OPENING FOR 3K

Fisheries and Oceans Canada advises that the Snow Crab fishery in 3K will open on the following dates:

Crab Management Area 4 will open at 6:00 am on Thursday April 11, 2024 for the purpose of travelling to the fishing ground. Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 72 hours after  the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00 am on Sunday April 14, 2024 is prohibited.

Crab Management Areas 3A and 3D will open at 12:00 am (midnight) on Sunday April 14, 2024 for the purpose of travelling to the fishing ground. Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 6 hours after the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00 am on Sunday April 14, 2024 is prohibited.

Crab Management Area 3BC will open at 6:00 am on Saturday, April 20, 2024 for the purpose of travelling to the fishing ground. Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 24 hours after the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00 am on Sunday April 21, 2024 is prohibited.

Crab Management Areas 3B and 3C will open at 12:00 am (midnight) on Sunday April 21, 2024 for the purpose of travelling to the fishing ground. Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 6 hours after the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00 am on Sunday April 21, 2024 is prohibited.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-016 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-021 comes into effect on April 10, 2024.

DFO advises that the directed Atlantic Halibut fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will open at 0600 hours on April 7, 2024.

The Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Pn will close should the bycatch of cod exceed established protocols.

Fish harvesters are reminded that:

- All licence holders are required to hail-out, at least three hours before leaving port, to the DFO toll-free number at 1-877-637-4315.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans would like to advise in-shore harvesters and other interested stakeholders that there is an outreach meeting in St. Anthony scheduled for Thursday, April 11, 2024, from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at the Lions Club.

The intent of these meetings is to provide inshore harvesters and other interested stakeholders an opportunity to discuss matters of concern with respect to the various inshore fisheries.

HERRING MG LARGE FLEET (Less than 65’) PURSE SEINE FISHERY OPENING IN AREAS 13 AND 14

DFO advises that the Herring purse seine fishery, for the large (less than 65’ mobile gear) fleet in Herring Fishing Areas 13 and 14, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, April 8, 2024.

The Small Fish Protocol approved and implemented for this fleet will continue for this management cycle.

DFO wishes to advise lobster harvesters in lobster Fishing Area 11 that Buddy-up has been approved. The 2024 Buddy-up Application is available by making a request through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) https://fishing-peche.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/

Arrangements must be requested, approved, and in place prior to the release of 2024 Lobster Licence Conditions, the start of the 2024 Lobster season, and before any fishing activity occurs for the buddy-up species.

PLEASE NOTE: APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY CLOSE OF BUSINESS DAY, 17:00 HOURS, ON APRIL 15, 2024.
