The Department of Fisheries and Oceans would like to advise that in-person Outreach meetings will be held throughout the Region in the coming weeks.

The intent of these meetings is to provide inshore harvesters and other interested stakeholders an opportunity to discuss matters of concern with respect to the various inshore fisheries.

The meeting schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, November 12, 2024 – Bonavista, Fire Hall: 6:00–8:00pm

Wednesday, November 13, 2024 – Winterton, Recreation Department: 10:00am–12:00pm

Wednesday, November 13, 2024 - Carbonear, Seniors Building: 3:00-5:00pm

Thursday, November 14, 2024 – Riverhead, Royal Canadian Legion : 10:00am-12:00pm

Thursday, November 14, 2024 – Petty Harbour, Petty Harbour CO-OP: 6:00–8:00pm

Wednesday, November 20, 2024 - Twillingate, Lions Club: 10:00am-12:00pm

Wednesday, November 20, 2024 - La Scie, La Scie Recreation Center: 6:00-8:00pm

Monday, December 9, 2024 - Greenspond, Town of Greenspond: 3:00-5:00pm

Tuesday, December 10, 2024 - Fogo, Anglican Church Hall (Centre Island): 10:00am-12:00pm

Atlantic Halibut Fishery for the Inshore Fixed-Gear Fleet Closing in 3Ps

DFO advises that the directed Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will close for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet using longlines at 1600 hours on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, as the quota is expected to be taken. There will be no Atlantic halibut bycatch permitted after this time.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-288 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-292 comes into effect on November 6, 2024.

Fixed Gear (Bar/Tuck Seine) Herring Fishery Opening in Notre Dame Bay (HFA 4)

DFO advises that the Fixed Gear (Bar/Tuck Seine) Herring fishery will open on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 0600 hours in Notre Dame Bay (Herring Fishing Area 4).

Licence conditions will soon be available in the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-290 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-291 comes into effect on November 6, 2024.

DFO OUTREACH MEETINGS ON THE PROPOSED FIVE-YEAR WHALESAFE FISHING GEAR STRATEGY

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans would like to advise that  in-person Outreach meetings to discuss the proposed five-year Whalesafe Gear Strategy will be held on the following dates and locations:  

Hampton Inn, St. John’s,  November 12th,  3-5pm
Clarenville Inn, Clarenville, November 13th, 10am-12pm
Albatross Hotel, Gander, November 14th, 10am-12pm 
Quality Inn, Corner Brook, November 15th, 10am-12pm.

The intent of these meetings is for DFO to provide an overview of the proposed five-year Whalesafe Gear Strategy and to offer harvesters an opportunity to provide their input.

Please note that additional sessions may be scheduled at a later date.

Ghost Gear Program’s Gear Management Survey

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) invites you to participate in the Ghost Gear Program’s Gear Management Survey. 

DFO is seeking to evaluate public knowledge of ghost gear (abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear) and gather feedback on future plans, measures and tools to prevent and address ghost gear. We invite you to fill out the survey online to have your voice heard.

The survey opened on October 28, 2024 and will close on November 30, 2024.

Opening of Northern cod Fishery for Midshore and Offshore Licence Holders

DFO advises that the Northern cod fishery will open for licence holders in the midshore and offshore fleets to fish in NAFO Divisions 2J3KL on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 0600 hours for vessel classes D4, D6, D7, B2, B3, B4, B6, B7, B8, B10, D175, D176, E, F, J, N, O, and R; and is scheduled to close April 15, 2025.

DFO advises that the Witch flounder (Greysole) fishery for vessels less than 65 feet, using Danish seine (vessel classes C50 and C351), will close in NAFO sub-Division 4Rd - from a line drawn due west of Cape Ray, north to a line drawn due west of Cape St. George on October 30, 2024 at 2000 hours.

Unit 1 Redfish Opening for NL based harvesters with Reserve Allocation

DFO advises the Unit 1 Redfish fishery (vessels less than 65 feet) will open to NL based harvesters with Reserve Allocation in Tranche 2 for the following vessel classes C439 and C441.  The fishery will open at 0600 hours on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, and will close at 2400 hours on December 31, 2024.

DFO also advises that a NEW schedule 16A for providing Daily Hail Reports for the Unit 1 Inshore Redfish commercial fishery is available on DFO’s website at: Schedule 16A: DFO approved format

These reports are required to be submitted by email to DFO.Hails65-rapport65.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca .
