DFO reminds harvesters that the following Groundfish fisheries are closed for the Newfoundland and Labrador-based fleets for all vessel classes:

NAFO Area 2 + Divisions 3KLMNO and 4R Greenland halibut (turbot) inshore fixed gear fleets

NAFO Divisions 3NO, 4RST, and Sub-Division 3Pn inshore fixed gear Atlantic halibut fleets, including 3NO inshore fixed gear Maritime vessels

NAFO Divisions 3NO White hake, Skate, Redfish and Monkfish inshore fleets

NAFO Divisions 2J3KL Northern cod inshore fleets

Lumpfish fishery in all NAFO Areas in Newfoundland and Labrador Region

NAFO Divisions 3KL Winter flounder (Blackback) fishery

The Unit 1 Redfish fishery (vessels less than 65 feet) will close to NL based harvesters with Reserve Allocation in Tranche 2 for the following vessel classes C420, C434, C435, C439, C441, C446, C447, 450, and 451 on December 31.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2024-055, 2024-184, 2024-283, 2024-287, 2024-297,  2024-306, 2024-324 and 2024-325 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2024-318, 2024-319, 2024-320, 2024-321, 2024-322, 2024-323, 2024-327 and 2024-330 will come into effect at 2359 hours on December 31, 2024.

Unit 1 Redfish Reserve Allocation Tranche 3

Notice description

As previously announced, 5,000 tonnes (t) from the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for Unit 1 Redfish for the 2024-25 management period has been set aside and held in reserve. This reserve allocation can be accessed by application. Applications are now being accepted for Tranche 3 for those planning to fish January 1 to March 31, 2025.  Applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and allocations awarded on a first come first serve basis.

Electronic Logbooks - Virtual Meetings

Notice description

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans would like to advise that Electronic Logbooks will be mandatory for Newfoundland and Labrador commercial Lobster harvesters and the Full-time and Mid-shore Snow crab fleets starting in the 2025 season. DFO will hold Virtual meetings with these harvesters to provider further information on ELOGs and this requirement. These meetings are scheduled on the following dates: 

Tuesday, January 7:
Fulltime Snow crab fleet – 10am
Lobster harvesters in 4R3Pn – 2pm

Wednesday, January 8: 
Lobster harvesters in 3Ps – 10am
Lobster harvesters in 3K – 2pm

Friday, January 10:
Lobster harvesters in 3L – 2pm

Harvesters who wish to attend are requested to confirm their attendance by sending an email to Kailey.Noonan@dfo-mpo.gc.ca . Please include the specific date and time of the meeting you wish to attend in your email. Upon confirmation, a link to the virtual meeting will be provided.

Message for Commercial Fisheries Clients of Fisheries and Oceans, Newfoundland and Labrador Region regarding the submission of commercial fishing logs and purchase slips.

DFO would like to remind harvesters, buyers and the public that you are responsible for submitting commercial fishing logs and purchase slips to the Department as per section 61 of the Fisheries Act and Schedule 4 of the commercial fishing license.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is advising clients that alternative means of delivery, for all items normally sent through regular Canada Post mail, should be used for the duration of any postal services disruption.  These alternate options are also available once the disruption is over.

DFO has various alternate options in place, to enable the timely submission of fishing logs and purchase slips to the department, such as:

• You may hand deliver fishing logs and purchase slips to the nearest DFO Area Office (Goose Bay, Corner Brook, Grand Falls – Windsor, and Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Centre (NAFC) St. John’s). *NAFC drop-off box is located at the Security Gate and will be accessible Monday to Friday, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm, until January 10, 2025. 

• You may use local courier services available to deliver fishing logs and purchase slips to DFO.
