Reminder Bait Season for Herring Closing in HFA 3 to 11

DFO reminds harvesters that the Bait Season for herring in Herring Fishing Areas 3 to 10 and that portion of Herring Fishing Area 11 from Point Crewe to Western Head, Hare Bay is closed from July 15 to August 15, 2022.

Harvesters are reminded that all bait nets must be removed from the water.

AMENDMENT: CHANGE TO 3KL FALL FISHERY OPTION: 2J3KL Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery - 2022 Season Dates and Catch Limits

AMENDMENT: Fish harvesters that choose the 3KL fall only option will NOT be required to fish outside of Canada's Territorial Sea (12 mile limit).  The Conservation and Harvesting Plan (CHP) that is available online at: 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) 2J3KL Stewardship Cod fishery - AMENDED July 15, 2022 will be updated to reflect this change. 

Fish harvesters that want to avail of the 3KL fall only fishery option MUST indicate their intention in writing via e-mail to Robyn.Lee@dfo-mpo.gc.ca by Monday, July 18, 2022. 

Harvesters must provide their FULL NAME, FIN, HOMEPORT in their email. 

DFO advises of the season dates and catch limits for the 2022 2J3KL Northern cod Stewardship fishery as indicated below:

Season Dates

In NAFO division 2J, the fishery is scheduled to open on Sunday, July 24 and is scheduled to close on Saturday October 15, 2022.

In NAFO divisions 3KL, the fishery is scheduled to open on Sunday, July 24 and is scheduled to close on Saturday November 5, 2022.

Catch Limits (all weights are round weight)

In NAFO division 2J, the following 2022 base bi-weekly authorized catch limits for cod apply:

July 24 - September 3: 30,000 lbs base bi-weekly

September 4 - October 15: 40,000 lbs base bi-weekly

In NAFO divisions 3KL, the following 2022 base weekly and base bi-weekly authorized catch limits for cod apply:

July 24 - August 13: 3,850 lbs base/week

August 14 - September 10: 7,700 lbs base bi-weekly

September 11 - November 5: 8,500 lbs base bi-weekly

For fish harvesters that have acquired additional cod shares through enterprise combining adjusted catch limits will be identified in their licence conditions.

To promote the distribution of catch throughout the season in 2022, harvesters will have the option of fishing the regular season at the weekly base catch limits identified above, or they may opt to fish only during the fall from September 11 to November 5, 2022 in 3KL.

Fall only Fishery Option (applicable to NAFO Divisions 3KL only):

Fish harvesters that choose the 3KL fall only fishery option will not be able to fish prior to September 11 and may only fish from September 11 - November 5, 2022 with a limit of 17,000 lbs base bi-weekly (round weight).

Any harvester who does not select the fall only fishery option by the deadline will receive conditions authorizing them to fish in the same NAFO area as their homeport. A 2J based licence holder will receive conditions for July 24 - October 15 and a 3KL based licence holder will receive conditions for the regular season (July 24 - November 5) at the catch limits identified above.

Additional Information:

Should in-season adjustments to catch limits or seasons be required, industry will be consulted and updates will be communicated to harvesters via a Notice to Fishers.

Atlantic Halibut Fishery Opening in NAFO Division 4R - Quebec Based Vessels

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut fishery in NAFO Division 4R for vessel classes A901 to A948 will open on Friday, July 15th at 0500 hours EDT and close at 2359 hours EDT on Friday, August 26th, 2022.

As a reminder, vessel classes A500 - A700 are open as well.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-104 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-112 comes into effect on July 8, 2022.

    St Croix Bay (and Crawley Island area), Placentia Bay

    Middle Arm (Penguin and Goose Arms), Bay of Islands

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Prohibition Orders NSN-2022-025, NSN-2022-091, NSN-2022-102, NSN-2022-148, and NSN-2022-150 have been repealed effective 1800 hours Monday, July 4, 2022.

*The purpose of these re-openings is to declassify the waters, which consists of removing a classification assigned to a shellfish sector, and will ensure that the sectors becomes unclassified and is therefore no longer subject to CSSP controls such as monitoring. Since these declassified areas will no longer be monitored, shellfish should not be harvested from these areas for human consumption.

REMINDER - 3Ps Lobster Fishing Season Closure Placentia Bay

DFO advises fish harvesters in NAFO Sub-division 3Ps that the lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay) will close at 2000 hours on Saturday, July 9, 2022.

Fish harvesters are reminded that all fishing gear must be removed from the water by closing time.

Harvesters are also advised to submit their completed Lobster logbooks as required.
