3Ps - Placentia Bay Commercial Scallop Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay), inside a line drawn from Point Verde (47°14.33'N, 54°00.94'W) on the east side of the bay, to Red Harbour Head (47°16.59'N, 54°58.58'W) on the west side, will open to commercial scallop fishing September 1, 2023, at 0600 hours. DFO reminds harvesters that DMP and hail requirements are mandatory in this fishery. This is in line with the management measures for this fishery.

Salmon Angling Season Closures

DFO reminds anglers of the following Salmon angling season closures:

Insular Newfoundland:

Zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14A will close to Salmon angling on September 7, 2023.

Fall catch and release Salmon angling is permitted on the Lower Humber River, Gander River, and Lower Exploits Rivers from September 8, 2023, to October 7, 2023. Retention of Salmon is not permitted. Catch-and-Release angling as follows:

- main stem of Lower Exploits River, from Stoney Brook to river mouth;

- main stem of Lower Humber River, from Boom Siding (outlet of Deer Lake) to lower end of Shellbird Island;

- main stem of Gander River from outlet on Gander Lake to river mouth.

- Angling not permitted on any tributaries of these rivers;

- Daily catch-and-release bag limit of three Salmon;

Labrador:

Zones 1, 2, and 14B will close to Salmon angling on September 15, 2023.

Anglers are reminded to complete their Salmon Angling Log. Angling log data is an important tool in the stock assessment process. If you purchased a license and did not fish, it is important to let us know. If you did fish please record your daily angling activity as accurately as possible. Check the appropriate box and submit your form.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Reminder of 2J Catch and Gear Limit Changes

DFO would like to remind harvesters fishing in the Northern cod Stewardship Fishery in 2J (Vessel Class A292), that catch limits and gear limits will change on Sunday, September 3rd as per the 2023 Conservation Harvesting Plan for this fishery.

The authorized catch limit will change to a bi-weekly base limit of 40,000 lbs. and the authorized gear limits will also change. Further details on gear and catch limits can be found in the 2023 CHP at: 2023 Conservation harvesting plan (CHP): 2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery

New licence conditions are required and will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that catch limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.

REMINDER - Snow Crab Season Closure For NAFO Division 3LNO

DFO reminds harvesters that the 3LNO Snow Crab fishery will close on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 2000 hours.

All gear must be removed from the water by closing time. The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.

3NO Fixed Gear Atlantic Halibut, Monkfish, Skate and White Hake Closing

DFO advises harvesters that the Atlantic Halibut, Skate, Monkfish and Hake fishery in NAFO divisions 3NO will close on August 29, 2023 at 1600 hours.

This closure is necessary to allow for a review of catches and determine if the amount of Atlantic halibut quota that is remaining is sufficient to permit the continuation of a directed fishery. A further announcement will be made on these fisheries once the review of landings is completed.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Orders 2023-213 and 2023-214 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2023-243 and 2023-244 come into effect on August 29, 2023.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery – Temporary Closure in NAFO Divisions 3KL

DFO advises that the 2J3KL Stewardship cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will close at 1600 hours on Sunday, August 27.
This closure applies to vessel classes A283 and A295.

Consistent with the provisions of the 2023 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) this closure is necessary as landings are approaching the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7,799t) up to September 9.

The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.

The Department will make an announcement at a later date regarding reopening the fishery in 3KL for the fall period for all harvesters (regular season and those who opted for fall only). This reopening will be communicated in advance via a Notice to Fish Harvesters.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-153 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-241 comes into effect on August 26, 2023.
