Fixed Gear Capelin Fishery Opening in Conception Bay

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will open on July 10, 2023 at 0600 hours in Conception Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 7).

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed gear.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-126 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-129 comes into effect on July 8, 2023.

Capelin Fixed Gear Fishery Opening in a Portion of Area 14

DFO advises that the Capelin fixed gear fishery using traps and bar seine (including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine"), for vessels less than 65 feet (19.8m) from Point Riche to Cape Bauld will open at 0600 hours on July 8, 2023.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-126 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-129 comes into effect on July 8, 2023.

Molluscan Shellfish Harvesting Reopening - Significant Rainfall - Great Northern Peninsula East

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public of the re-opening for the harvesting of all bivalve shellfish including Arctic wedge calms, Atlantic razor clams, Atlantic surf clams, bay quahaugs, northern propeller clams, ocean quahaugs, softshell clam, Stimpson's surf clams, bay mussels, blue mussel, horse mussels, American oysters, bay scallops, Iceland scallops, purple hinge rock scallop, (except sea scallops), northern moon snails, waved whelks, and Stimpson's whelks for recreational or commercial purposes in the following areas effective 1600 hours on Friday, June 30, 2023:

From North Lobster Point (at Lat 51.30330 Long -55.59333), southeast to a point at Lat 50.73710 Long -55.33576 and then southwest to Northeast Head Great Harbour Deep (at Lat 50.37130 Long -56.42478).

2023 Bluefin Tuna Homewaters Fishery Opening

Notice description

DFO advises that Bluefin tuna fishery for vessels fishing homewaters in NAFO Divisions 3KLNOP will open at 0600 hours on Saturday, July 1, 2023.

Tags are only available to those harvesters who have declared they will fish homewaters and must be purchased by August 4, 2023.

Licence conditions are available on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS). Observer coverage must be paid prior to tag purchase.

Tuna tags and ICCAT forms are available at DFO Detachment offices in Bay Roberts, Clarenville and Marystown. Harvesters are asked to contact DFO Detachment offices to arrange tag pick up.

Harvesters are reminded that the use of VMS is mandatory for the 2023 season.

Harvesters are also reminded that there is a new logbook for the 2023 season that can be picked up at the Fish Harvesters’ Resource Centres.

Angling gear only may be used while fishing within 12 nautical miles of the nearest point of land.

Bluefin tuna harvesters are encouraged to return tuna heads to one of the locations listed in the Conservation Harvesting Plan.
