DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear will close on July 11, 2024 at 1800 hours in Conception Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 7).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-122 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-135 comes into effect at 1600 hours on July 11, 2024.

Salmon River Closures in Salmon Fishing Area 4 and 5

Notice description

DFO advises anglers that due to extremely high water temperatures and/or low water levels, the following rivers in Salmon Fishing Areas (SFA) 4 and 5 will be restricted to morning angling only effective one hour after sunset on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

During this period, angling is permitted from one hour before sunrise to 10:00 am each day and will be closed to angling from 10:01 am to one hour before sunrise on the following day.

The rivers will reopen as conditions improve. Please refer to the 2024 Angler's Guide for further information on the environmental protocol.

Soft-Shell Closed Areas for Crab and Shrimp in NAFO Division 3K

DFO advises that in accordance with the soft-shell protocol, the following grid in Crab Fishing Area 4 in NAFO Division 3K will close to fishing Snow Crab and Northern Shrimp at midnight on Thursday, July 11, 2024 due to a high incidence of soft-shell crab:

Grid AB 38

This grid will be closed to Snow crab fishing for the remainder of the year. Harvesters should note that all gear in this grid must be removed immediately. Gear must be hauled and not reset on your next fishing trip.

The closure for Northern shrimp is in effect for 60 days, and will re-open on September 8, 2024, if the shrimp fishery is open at that time.

Grid quadrant AB 38 is defined as the area bounded by the following coordinates:

50° 50' North, 54° 10' West;

50° 50' North, 54° 00' West;

50° 40' North, 54° 00' West;

50° 40' North, 54° 10' West;

50° 50' North, 54° 10' West;

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will open on July 9, 2024, at 0600 hours in Bonavista Bay and Trinity Bay (Capelin Fishing Areas 5 and 6).

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed gear.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO's National On-line Licencing System.
