DFO advises harvesters that the fixed gear Herring fishery for barr/tuck seine and gillnet & trap fisheries will open in Herring Fishing Area 3 (White Bay) in NAFO Division 3K at 0600 hours on Sunday, August 21, 2022.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-097 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-190 comes into effect on August 19, 2022.

Harvesters are reminded that dragging is not permitted in the inshore crab fishing areas in NAFO Divisions 3KL.

Molluscan Shellfish Harvesting Closure for Roberts Arm Area, Notre Dame Bay

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public of the closure for the harvesting of all bivalve shellfish (including Arctic wedge calms, Atlantic razor clams, Atlantic surf clams, bay quahaugs, northern propeller clams, ocean quahaugs, softshell clam, Stimpson's surf clams, bay mussels, blue mussel, horse mussels, American oysters, bay scallops, Iceland scallops, purple hinge rock scallop, (except sea scallops), northern moon snails, waved whelks, and Stimpson's whelks) for recreational or commercial purposes in the following areas effective 1600 hours August 15, 2022. This closure is a result of the town of Roberts Arm having to shut down and by-pass the wastewater treatment plant.

- Those waters adjacent to the community of Robert's Arm that are inside, or west, of a line drawn from 49.50631 degrees N, 55.78014 degrees W southeast to 49.48923 degrees N, 55.76915 degrees W (WGS84).

It is illegal to fish for molluscs or possess molluscs from these closed areas. More detailed information on these and other closed areas can be obtained from the nearest DFO office or the following website: Check Before you Harvest

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Temporary Closure in NAFO Divisions 3KL

DFO advises that the Northern cod Stewardship fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will close at 2000 hours on Wednesday, August 17. 

This closure applies to vessel classes A283 and A295. 

Consistent with the provisions of the 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) this closure is necessary as landings are approaching the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7799t) up to September 10. 

The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment. 

The Department will make a further announcement regarding reopening the fishery in 3KL for the fall period for all harvesters (regular season and those who opted for fall only) at a later time and will communicate that decision in advance via a Notice to Fish Harvesters.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery Reminder of 3KL Catch and Gear Limit Changes

DFO would like to remind harvesters fishing in the 3KL regular season that catch limits and gear limits will change on Sunday, August 14th and new licence conditions are required. This applies to vessel classes A283 and A295. New licence conditions will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS). 

The authorized catch limit will change to a bi-weekly base limit of 7700 lbs and the authorized gear limits will also change as per the CHP on August 14, 2022. Further details on gear and catch limits can be found at: 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) 2J3KL Stewardship Cod fishery - AMENDED July 15, 2022

Landings for the 2022 2J3KL Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery total 5,765t for the period up to and including Wednesday, August 10th. 

The Department will continue to monitor this fishery closely to ensure that the total harvest in 3KL remains within the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7799t) as per the CHP. An update will be communicated to harvesters by a Notice to Fishers early next week. 

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that landing limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that it is a condition of their Greenland halibut (Turbot) NAFO Divisions 2+3k licence to hail out 24 hours prior to leaving port for each fishing trip.
