Lumpfish Fishery Opening in parts of NAFO Division 3L

DFO wishes to advise harvesters that the Lumpfish fishery will open at 0600 hours on May 24, 2023 and close at 2000 hours on July 12, 2023 in the following NAFO Division 3L Lumpfish fishing areas:

Bonavista Bay North
Trinity Bay
Conception Bay

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

Licence fees and licence conditions will soon be available on the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-075 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-082 comes into effect on May 24, 2023.

DFO wishes to advise harvesters that the Lumpfish fishery will open at 0600 hours on May 22, 2023 and close at 2000 hours on July 10, 2023 in the following NAFO Division 3K Lumpfish fishing area:

Little Harbour Deep Head to Cape St. John

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

LOBSTER FISHING OPENING IN 4R

DFO advises of the following 4R lobster area opening and closing dates:
Note all opening times are 0600 hours and all closing times are 2000 hours.

- LFA 14B (Point Riche to Big Brook): May 23, 2023 to July 15, 2023;
- LFA 14C (Big Brook to Cape Bauld) May 23, 2023 to July 15, 2023.

Harvesters are reminded that they are not permitted to retrieve fishing gear or possess lobsters during the initial 48 hour gear-setting period after the opening date.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2023-063 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-076 comes into effect on May 20, 2023.

ATLANTIC HALIBUT FISHERY REOPENING IN SUB-DIVISION 3Pn

DFO advises that the Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will reopen at 0600 hours on May 15, 2023.

DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the incidental catch of Cod exceeds the established protocols.

DFO advises that the retention of Atlantic halibut bycatch by fixed-gear vessels less than 65 feet directing for skate and monkfish in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps is permitted. By-catch provisions are outlined in harvesters Groundfish General Licence Conditions.

DFO advises that the 2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery will open at 0600 hours on Monday, May 15th, 2023 for vessel class C175.

Conditions of license are available through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

As per your 2023 conditions of license, a daily hail is required. Hails must be sent to Hails65@dfo-mpo.gc.ca

DFO advises that the directed Cod fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will open to inshore fixed gear fleets at 0600 hours on Monday, May 15, 2023.

DFO advises that the retention of Atlantic halibut bycatch by fixed-gear vessels less than 65 feet directing for cod in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps is permitted. By-catch provisions are outlined in harvesters Groundfish General Licence Conditions.

A Conservation Harvesting Plan that outlines management measures for the inshore fixed-gear sector for cod and other groundfish in 3Ps will be made available online at a later date at Fisheries Management Decisions for Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the Arctic - 2023
