DFO advises that the Scallop fishery in Scallop Fishing Area 14A (Ferolle Point to Cape Bauld) will open May 27, 2023 at 0600 hours.

Fish harvesters are reminded that for quota monitoring purposes, the north and south quota management areas are divided at 51 degrees 25 minute North latitude.

Fish harvesters are reminded that they must have at-sea observer coverage services arranged before commencing fishing.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-065 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-087 comes into effect on May 27, 2023.

2023 Snow Crab Season Opening for 2J (South)

DFO advises that the Snow Crab fishery will open at 6:00 a.m. Monday May 29, 2023, for 2J (South) and will close at 2400 hours on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 72 hours after the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00AM on Thursday, June 1st is prohibited.

License fees and license conditions are available through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region give notice that Variation Order 2023-024 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-088 comes into effect on May 27, 2023.

Atlantic Salmon Recreational Fishery

DFO advises anglers that the season dates for the 2023 Atlantic Salmon recreational fishery are:

Insular Newfoundland - June 1 to September 7, 2023

Labrador - June 15 to September 15, 2023

Management measures include:

- Anglers will be permitted to retain a total of two salmon with a maximum of one salmon on Class 2 rivers.

- A catch and release limit of three fish per day for all scheduled rivers in Newfoundland and Labrador with the exception of Class 0 rivers. On Class 0 rivers anglers are permitted to catch and release a limit of two fish per day.

- The retention of salmon on non-scheduled waters is not permitted.

- The continuation of the multi-faceted Environmental Protocol.

Opening Date for 2023 NL Commercial Eel Fishery in Coastal Waters

DFO advises fish harvesters that the opening date for the 2023 NL commercial Eel fishery in coastal waters is June 1, 2023.

Licences and conditions are available through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System and the site location conditions may be obtained from the DFO Detachment offices.

The eel fishery will close on October 31, 2023.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2022-060 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-084 comes into effect on May 26, 2023.

DFO Trout/Char Fishery NATIONAL ONLINE LICENSING Outreach Meetings - Labrador

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans would like to advise that Community Outreach meetings will be held June 5th to 7th on the south coast of Labrador.

The intent of these meetings is to provide assistance to fishers who need help setting up account in NOLS for the purpose of the DFO Trout/Char Subsistence net fishery.

The locations are as follows:
Cartwright: 50 Plus Club, June 5th 12 pm -4:30 pm
Port Hope Simpson: Alexis Hotel, June 6th, 10 am - 4:30 pm
Mary's Harbour: Recreation center, June 7th, 10 am- 4:30 pm

GREENLAND HALIBUT FISHERY OPENING IN NAFO DIVISION 4RST

DFO advises that the Greenland Halibut (turbot) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST will open in water depths 140 fathoms or greater, for fixed gear vessels (Vessel Class A284) less than 65 feet based in NAFO Divisions 2J4R3Pn, will open at 0600 hours on May 28, 2023.

By-catch limits are outlined in conditions.

4R3Pn based fixed gear groundfish harvesters who are not eligible under the Atlantic Halibut Sustainability Plan who wish to participate in the 4R Greenland Halibut (Turbot) fishery should submit a request through the National Online Licencing System.

Lumpfish Fishery Opening in a portion of NAFO Division 3K

DFO wishes to advise harvesters that the Lumpfish fishery will open at 0600 hours on May 27, 2023 and close at 2000 hours on July 15, 2023 in the following NAFO Division 3K Lumpfish fishing area:

North Head to Cape Freels  

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

Licence fees and licence conditions will soon be available on the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).
