DFO wishes to advise anglers that a portion of Northwest Brook, Alexander Bay, noted below, will be closed to all angling for the season.  

This precautionary approach is a measure to aid in the conservation of Brook Trout and Atlantic Salmon.

The closed area is that portion of Northwest Brook and Boatswains Brook from the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) downstream to the Bait & Spinner/Fly Fishing signs at the mouth of the main stem of Northwest Brook, Northwest Arm, Alexander Bay.  

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2025-055, 2025-056, 2025-057, 2025-058, and 2025-059 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2025-067, 2025-068, 2025-069, 2025-070, and 2025-071 come into effect on May 31, 2025.

Herring Fishery Closing For GILLNETS/TRAP ONLY in NAFO Divisions 3KL (HFA 3-9)

DFO advises that the fixed gear herring (gillnet/trap) fisheries for White Bay, Notre Dame Bay, Bonavista Bay, Trinity Bay, Conception Bay, the Southern Shore and St. Mary's Bay, (Herring Fishing Areas 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) will close at 2000 hours on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-066 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-072 will come into force on May 31, 2025.

DFO advises that the Whelk fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will open at 0600 hours on Sunday, June 1, 2025 and close at 2000 hours on Friday, October 31, 2025.

Emerging 3LNO Sea Cucumber Fishery Opening

DFO advises that the Emerging Sea Cucumber fishery in NAFO Divisions 3LNO will open at 0600 hours on Sunday June 1, 2025 to permit holders.

License conditions will become available in the DFO National Online Licensing System (NOLS) in advance of the planned fishing dates that permit-holders have submitted to the Department.

Permit holders are also reminded that completion of assigned survey blocks is a condition of licence, and that 100% at-sea observer coverage is also required.

Opening Date for 2025 NL Commercial Eel Fishery in Coastal Waters

DFO advises fish harvesters that the opening date for the 2025 NL commercial Eel fishery in coastal waters is June 1, 2025.

Licences and conditions are available through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System and the site location conditions must be obtained from the DFO Detachment offices.

The eel fishery will close on October 31, 2025.

NL Atlantic Salmon Recreational Fishery

DFO advises anglers that the season dates for the 2025 Atlantic Salmon recreational fishery are:

Insular Newfoundland - June 1 to September 7, 2025

Labrador - June 15 to September 15, 2025

Management Measures:

Anglers will be permitted to retain a total of two salmon, with a maximum of one salmon on Class 2 rivers.

A catch and release limit of three fish per day for all scheduled rivers in Newfoundland and Labrador with the exception of Class 0 rivers. On Class 0 rivers, anglers are permitted to catch and release a maximum of two fish per day.

The retention of salmon on non-scheduled waters is not permitted.

The continuation of a multi-faceted Environmental Protocol. Details will be outlined in the 2025-2026 Angler’s Guide.

ATLANTIC HALIBUT FISHERY REOPENING IN SUB-DIVISION 3Pn

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut fishery in NAFO sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will reopen at 0600 hours on May 24, 2025.

DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the incidental catch of Cod exceeds the established protocols.
