DFO reminds harvesters that herring fisheries in Herring Fishing Areas (HFAs) 1 and 2 for mobile gear, Herring Fishing Area (HFA) 3 for fixed gear barr and tuck seine and Herring Fishing Area (HFA) 14 for all fixed gear (trap, gillnet, barr and tuck seine) are closed.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2022-231 and 2022-237 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2022-260 and 2022-261 come into effect at 2359 hours on December 31, 2022.

DFO reminds harvesters that the following Groundfish fisheries are closed for the Newfoundland and Labrador-based fleets for all vessel classes: 

 NAFO Area 2 + Divisions 3KLMNO and 4R Greenland halibut (turbot) inshore fixed gear fisheries

 NAFO Divisions 3NO, 4RST, and Sub-Division 3Pn inshore fixed gear Atlantic halibut commercial fisheries 

 NAFO 3NO White hake, Skate and Monkfish inshore fleet fisheries 

 Stewardship cod fishery in NAFO Divisions 2J3KL

 Lumpfish fishery in all NAFO areas in Newfoundland and Labrador Region

 NAFO Divisions 3KL Winter flounder (Blackback) fishery

 NAFO Division 4R Witch flounder fishery

 Unit 1 Redfish index fishery for the inshore mobile gear fleet

DFO advises that the Bluefin Tuna fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KLNOP for all vessels will close at 2359 hours on December 31, 2022.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-225 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-257 comes into effect at 2359 hours on December 31, 2022.

DFO advises that Bluefin Tuna will close to vessels with a fishing port in Quebec at 2359 hours EDT on December 31, 2022.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-225 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-257 comes into effect at 2359 hours on December 31, 2022.

DFO advises that the Squid, Whelk and Toad Crab fisheries in Fishing Areas 1 to 14, NAFO Divisions 2GHJ, 3KL, 3Ps, and 4R, as well as the 3Ps Sea Cucumber will close on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at 2359 hours.

The Scallop fishery will also be closing on December 31, with the exception of the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay), inside a line drawn from Point Verde (47°14.33'N, 54°00.94'W) on the east side of the bay, to Red Harbour Head (47°16.59'N, 54°58.58'W) on the west side, which will remain open until March 31, 2023. This is in line with the management measures for this fishery.

DFO also reminds harvesters that the Snow crab fishery and lobster fishery are closed for all fishing areas.

DFO reminds the Public that the Newfoundland and Labrador Recreational Groundfish fishery is closed for the 2022 season.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2022-080 and 2022-081 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2022-244 and 2022-245 come into effect at 2359 hours on December 31, 2022.

DFO reminds harvesters that all capelin fisheries in the Newfoundland and Labrador Region are closed.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2022-109 and 2022-194 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2022-241 and 2022-240 come into effect at 2359 hours on December 31, 2022.

All commercial fish harvesters are reminded to review their 2022 licenses in the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) at National Online Licensing System as soon as possible to confirm that they have renewed all their 2022 commercial licenses and/or 2022 vessel registration(s).

In order to retain the privilege to be issued the licenses in the following year, commercial harvesters must renew both their commercial fishing licenses and vessel registrations on an annual basis, whether or not the harvester actively fished or used the vessel for harvesting in that year.

Also, all 2022 Individual Quota (IQ) fees must be paid, with the exception of commercial cod IQ fees. Commercial cod IQ fees are not required to be paid if the licence holder had no directed or incidental landings of cod; however, the groundfish license fee must still be paid each year.

Harvesters who have not yet renewed their licenses for 2022 are reminded that they must complete their license renewals before midnight, Friday, December 30, 2022. It is very important to be aware that any licenses and registrations that are not renewed before this date will not be available in the following year - these licences will be cancelled.

As well, DFO advises fish harvesters based in the Newfoundland and Labrador Region that the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) will not be available for renewal of 2022 fishing licenses after midnight Friday, December 30. This is to allow for year-end data updating processes and system maintenance.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) launched the National Online Licensing System in the spring of 2013 for fish harvesters to complete routine licensing transactions using a computer with internet access. This includes: renewing licenses and vessel registrations; paying the associated fees; and printing licenses, license conditions, payment receipts, and other licensing documents.

 DFO advises harvesters that the Monkfish, Skate and White Hake fishery in NAFO divisions 3NO for vessels using gillnets and longline will close at 1800 hours on December 16, 2022.

This closure applies to vessel classes A250, A251, A253, A254, A256, A257, A259, A260, A262, A263, A265, A266, A268, A269, A271 and A272.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-170 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-239 comes into effect at 1800 hours on December 16, 2022.
