2023 SNOW CRAB SEASON OPENING FOR Inshore 3L and 3Ps

Fisheries and Oceans Canada advises that the Snow Crab fishery will open at 12:00 am (midnight) on Monday, April 10, 2023 for the purpose of travelling to the fishing ground, and gear can be set 6 hours later at 6:00 am on Monday, April 10, 2023 for the following areas:

- Inshore Crab fishing areas in 3L

- Inshore Crab fishing areas in 3Ps

Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 6 hours after the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00 am on Monday April 10, 2023 is prohibited.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-248 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-024 comes into effect on April 7, 2023.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada advises that the Snow Crab fishery will open at 6:00 a.m. on Friday April 7, 2023 for the purpose of travelling to the fishing ground for the following:

- 3L Small Supps, 3L Large Supps, 3L Fulltime and 3L Greater than 65’ fleets

- 3Ps Supplementary fleet

Fish harvesters are reminded that they are not authorized to set Crab traps until 72 hours after the Snow Crab fishery season has opened. Therefore, any setting of Crab traps or possession of Crab before 6:00AM on Monday April 10, 2023 is prohibited.

Area Selection Declaration Available for 3Ps Lobster Harvesters from LFA 11

DFO wishes to advise lobster harvesters that a declaration is required for Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 11W for the 2023 season.

Please note a declaration is only required if you intend to fish in LFA 11W – that portion of Lobster Fishing Area 11 west of Western Head, Hare Bay.

All LFA 11 harvesters that do not declare their intention to fish in LFA 11W will be issued a licence to fish in LFA 11E – which includes that portion of Lobster Fishing Area 11 located east of Western Head, Hare Bay.

PLEASE NOTE: Declaration can be made by making a request through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

Declarations must be received by close of business day Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

DFO advises fish harvesters that the portion of Scallop Fishing Area 10 (Placentia Bay), inside a line drawn from Point Verde (47 14.33" N, 54 00.94"W) on the east side of the bay, to Red Harbour (47 16.59"N, 54 58.58"w) on the west side, Inner Bay, will close 2000 hours March 31, 2023 and will reopen 0600 hours September 1, 2023 in line with the management plan for that fishery.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans would like to advise 3Ps sea cucumber licence and permit holders that the 2023 3Ps Sea Cucumber Advisory meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 beginning at 9:00 am (Newfoundland Standard Time).

This is a hybrid meeting and will take place via Zoom and in person at the Quality Inn, Gander.  The link to the Zoom meeting and a toll-free dial-in option are provided below. 

The intent of this meeting is to provide sea cucumber licence and permit harvesters and other interested stakeholders with a review of the fishery and an opportunity to discuss matters of concern with respect to management measures and other issues in this fishery.

DFO wishes to advise inshore crab harvesters in Crab Fishing Areas 3B (White Bay) and 3C (Green Bay) in NAFO Division 3K that applications for CFA 3BC are now available.

Harvesters can obtain an application by contacting the area licencing center by phone or e-mail. Applications can also be requested from the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).

Applications must be returned to the Area Office by close of business on March 17, 2023.

DFO wishes to remind 3Ps inshore crab harvesters in Crab Fishing Area 11E that Area Selection applications are available for Inner or Outer areas and can be requested through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS). 

APPLICATIONS NEED TO BE COMPLETED.  IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE AN APPLICATION, YOU WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY ASSIGNED TO THE INNER AREA.

Please upload completed application to the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

NOTE: APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY CLOSE OF BUSINESS DAY MARCH 9, 2023.

Submission of the application does not indicate approval. The final decision will be communicated through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) via appropriate documentation.

- Snow Crab (Less than 40' fleet - this will be updated to less than 50' once the policy has been approved.)
-Select the Instructions link to open and save or print the application
-Complete and sign the application (Fish Harvester A and Fish Harvester B must sign the same application. 
-Save a Scanned copy or picture of the signed application
-Select Browse to attach the signed application to your request 
-Select Submit 

Any harvesters experiencing issues with accessing their online NOLS account, should contact the NOLS Support Line 1-877-535-7307 to have the issue resolved.
