DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will close on July 9, 2025 at 22:00 hours in Conception Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 7).

Pending landing assessment, a reopening may be announced. Harvesters are advised to closely monitor Notice to Fishers for information.

Fixed Gear Capelin Fishery Opening in Bonavista Bay

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear (tuck, bar seine and trap) will open on July 9, 2025, at 0600 hours in Bonavista Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 5).

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed gear.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO's National On-line Licencing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2025-108 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-115 comes into effect on July 9, 2025.

Buddy-up Applications Available for Capelin Harvesters in a Portion of 3K

DFO wishes to advise fixed gear capelin license holders with homeports in Green Bay and the portion of White Bay from Hampden to Cape John that the 2025 buddy-up applications are available.

Harvesters can request these forms by submitting a request through NOLS  

Online Licensing - Submitting a Request and Checking the Request Status

Please note that Buddy-up Applications MUST BE SUBMITTED AND APPROVED each year PRIOR to the start of the 2025 capelin fishing season.

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed gear.

2025 Bluefin Tuna Homewaters Fishery Opening

DFO advises that Bluefin tuna fishery for vessels fishing homewaters in NAFO Divisions 3KLNOP will open at 0600 hours on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Licence conditions will be available prior to opening on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS). Observer coverage must be paid prior to tag purchase.

Tuna tags and ICCAT forms are available at DFO Detachment offices in Bay Roberts, Clarenville and Marystown. 

Harvesters are asked to contact DFO Detachment offices to arrange tag pick up.

Harvesters are reminded that the use of VMS is mandatory for the 2025 season.

Angling gear only may be used while fishing within 12 nautical miles of the nearest point of land.

Bluefin tuna harvesters are encouraged to return tuna heads to one of the locations listed in the Conservation Harvesting Plan.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-313 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-107 comes into effect on July 05, 2025.

2025 ATLANTIC MACKEREL BAIT FISHERY CLOSING

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be pausing the Atlantic mackerel bait fishery in all Mackerel Fishing Areas as of 17:00 hours on July 2, 2025. This notice to stop fishing is for conservation purposes as landings are near the first 220 tonne portion of the total allowable catch (TAC).

The second 220 tonnes portion of the Atlantic mackerel bait fishery TAC is scheduled to be released in the Fall with the exact date to be communicated in the coming weeks.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-050 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-104 comes into effect at 16:00 hours on July 2, 2025.
