DFO advises that the Mobile Gear (Purse Seine) Herring fishery will open on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 0600 hours in White Bay and Notre Dame Bay (Herring Fishing Areas 3 and 4).

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2023-119 has been revoked and Variation Order 2023-222 comes into effect on August 16, 2023.

DFO advises that the capelin fishery for vessels using fixed gear will close on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 2000 hours in Trinity Bay and Conception Bay (Capelin Fishing Areas 6 and 7).

DFO advises that the Capelin fixed gear fishery using traps and bar seine (including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine"), for vessels less than 65 feet, in a portion of Western NL will open at 1400 hours on July 27, 2023.

The specific Capelin quota zone that will open is as follows:

Capelin Fishing Area 14 from the Quebec/Labrador border, north to Cape Charles and west of a line drawn between the following points:

51 degrees 20 minutes North, 56 degrees 57 minutes West, and

51 degrees 57 minutes North, 55 degrees 21 minutes West.

Notre Dame Bay (Capelin Fishing Area 4)
• Cape St. John to North Head
• North Head to Dog Bay Point
• Dog Bay Point to Cape Freels

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed Gear.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System.
