DFO advises harvesters that the Fixed Gear (Gillnet/Trap) Herring fishery will open in Herring Fishing Areas 5-9 on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 0600 hours.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-101 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-210 comes into effect on August 15, 2024.

DFO advises that the Capelin purse seine fishery for mobile gear vessels, less than and greater than 65', in Capelin Fishing Areas 13 and 14 (NAFO Division 4R) will close at 2000 hours on August 9, 2024.

DFO advises that the Capelin fixed gear fishery using traps and bar seine (including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine"), for vessels less than 65 feet (19.8m) in Capelin Fishing Areas 13 and 14 will close at 2000 hours on August 9, 2024.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-174 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-198 comes into effect on August 9, 2024.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada will release the remaining 235 tonnes portion of the total allowable catch (TAC) in all Mackerel Fishing Areas on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Please be advised the Atlantic mackerel bait fishery is a competitive fishery and is intended for personal-use only.

For the NL Region in Mackerel Fishing Areas 1 -14 the personal use mackerel bait fishery will open at 0600 hours on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

Harvesters participating in this personal use bait fishery are reminded:

• they will be restricted to a daily limit of 454 kg (1,000 lbs) to be fished by either gillnet or handline,
• a mandatory hail-in will be required for all harvesters participating in the personal use mackerel bait fishery. An accurate catch estimate must be provided prior to offloading your catch. Harvesters must hail a trip summary to the Fish Harvesters’ Resource Centre at 1-877-884-7359 / 1-888-562-4511

Harvesters will be alerted of closures through a Notice to Fish Harvesters.

Bait licences will be available through the National Online Licensing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-143 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-158 comes into effect at 1600 hours on July 22, 2024.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO National On-line Licencing System for those harvesters who have been contacted for the above date.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-142 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-157 comes into effect on July 19, 2024.

• North Head to Dog Bay Point

• Dog Bay Point to Cape Freels

Harvesters are reminded that the fishery must be open for 24 hours before any Capelin can be removed from any fixed Gear.
