AMENDMENT - 2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Reopening in NAFO Divisions 3KL for Fall

DFO reminds harvesters that the Northern cod Stewardship fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will reopen to harvesters who selected the regular season at 0600 hours on Sunday, September 11, 2022. This reopening applies to vessel classes A283 and A295.

DFO also reminds harvesters that the Northern cod Stewardship fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will open to harvesters who selected the fall only fishery option at 0600 hours on Sunday, September 11, 2022.  This opening applies to vessel class A296.

Licence conditions for the fall period commencing September 11 will be available soon to harvesters (both those who selected the regular season and fall only fishery option) via the National Online Licensing System. 

As per the Conservation Harvesting Plan, the base authorized bi-weekly limits for the fall period commencing September 11 are:

3KL: Regular Season fishers = 8,500 lbs. base bi-weekly

3KL: Fall Only Option = 17,000 lbs. base bi-weekly

To ensure that the total harvest remains within the maximum authorized harvest, the Department will continue to closely monitor this fishery. There is approximately 2,100t remaining for the Northern cod Stewardship fishery in 3KL. Any changes or adjustments that may need to be made will be communicated in advance to harvesters via a Notice to Fishers. 

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that catch limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary. 

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-183 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-204 comes into effect on September 1, 2022.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Temporary Closure in NAFO Divisions 3KL

DFO advises that the Northern cod Stewardship fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will close at 2000 hours on Wednesday, August 17. 

This closure applies to vessel classes A283 and A295. 

Consistent with the provisions of the 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) this closure is necessary as landings are approaching the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7799t) up to September 10. 

The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment. 

The Department will make a further announcement regarding reopening the fishery in 3KL for the fall period for all harvesters (regular season and those who opted for fall only) at a later time and will communicate that decision in advance via a Notice to Fish Harvesters.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery Reminder of 3KL Catch and Gear Limit Changes

DFO would like to remind harvesters fishing in the 3KL regular season that catch limits and gear limits will change on Sunday, August 14th and new licence conditions are required. This applies to vessel classes A283 and A295. New licence conditions will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS). 

The authorized catch limit will change to a bi-weekly base limit of 7700 lbs and the authorized gear limits will also change as per the CHP on August 14, 2022. Further details on gear and catch limits can be found at: 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) 2J3KL Stewardship Cod fishery - AMENDED July 15, 2022

Landings for the 2022 2J3KL Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery total 5,765t for the period up to and including Wednesday, August 10th. 

The Department will continue to monitor this fishery closely to ensure that the total harvest in 3KL remains within the maximum authorized harvest allocated for the summer period (7799t) as per the CHP. An update will be communicated to harvesters by a Notice to Fishers early next week.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that it is a condition of their Greenland halibut (Turbot) NAFO Divisions 2+3k licence to hail out 24 hours prior to leaving port for each fishing trip.

4RST ATLANTIC HALIBUT - FOURTH SEASONAL OPENING DATE FOR THE NL INSHORE FIXED-GEAR FLEET

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in Period 4, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, August 15, 2022. This fishery is open to vessel class A291 and will close at 2000 hours on August 28, 2022.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.
