DFO advises that the Witch flounder (Greysole) fishery for vessels less than 65 feet, using Danish seine (vessel classes C50 and C351), will close in NAFO sub-Division 4Rd - from a line drawn due west of Cape Ray, north to a line drawn due west of Cape St. George on October 4, 2022 at 2000 hours.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-099 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-220 comes into effect at 1700 hours on October 4, 2022.

4RST ATLANTIC HALIBUT - FIFTH SEASONAL OPENING DATE FOR THE NL INSHORE FIXED-GEAR FLEET

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in Period 5, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, October 3, 2022. This fishery is open to vessel class A293 and will close at 2000 hours on October 23, 2022.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.

Any harvester intending to fish in this period that has been impacted by Fiona is asked to reach out to the Corner Brook Area Office at 709 649-3549.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-210 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-216 comes into effect on September 30, 2022.

Closure of the 3KL Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery

DFO advises harvesters that the 2022 Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will close on Thursday, September 29th at 18:00 hours to all vessel classes. 

As of September 25, approximately 9,800t (94%) of the 3KL 10,400t Maximum Allowable Harvest has been landed. 

The Department prioritizes safety at sea. If a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment. 

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2022-214 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-215 comes into effect on September 27, 2022.

DFO advises that the Winter flounder (Blackback) fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL will open at 06:00 hours on September 14, 2022.

Fish harvesters are reminded that updated conditions have been issued to reflect changes to fishing areas in Trinity Bay. Conditions are available through the National Online licencing system. 

Fish harvesters should review these conditions for details on the changes and to be familiar with by-catch provisions for this fishery. By-catch levels will be closely monitored and areas will be closed where cod by-catch is excessive.

OPENING DATE for Stewardship Cod Fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL for Fall Season

DFO advises harvesters that the 2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fall Fishery will now open on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 06:00 hours.

Fish Harvesters are advised that license conditions are available on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

As per the CHP the base authorized bi-weekly limits will be:                                                

3KL: Regular Season fishers = 8500 lbs. base bi-weekly                                              

3KL: Fall Only Option = 17,000 lbs. base bi-weekly

To ensure that the total harvest remains within the maximum authorized harvest, the Department will continue to monitor this fishery closely. There is approximately 2,100t remaining in 3KL. Any changes or adjustments that may need to be made will be communicated in advance to harvesters via a Notice to Fishers.                                                      

Harvesters are reminded that they are to ensure that landing limits are not exceeded by setting only the amount of fishing gear that is necessary.

DFO advises that due to the marine forecast and DFO’s commitment to safety at sea, that the Fall opening of Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery in NAFO Divisions 3KL that was scheduled to open on September 11th, 2022 will be delayed. The Department will reassess on Monday, September 12, 2022, and will provide an update at that time.

2J3KL Stewardship Cod Fishery - Reminder of 2J Catch and Gear Limit Changes

DFO would like to remind harvesters fishing in the Northern cod Stewardship Fishery in 2J (Vessel Class A292) that as per the 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan for this fishery, catch limits and gear limits will change on Sunday, September 4th.

The authorized catch limit will change to a bi-weekly base limit of 40,000 lbs. and the authorized gear limits will also change. Further details on gear and catch limits can be found in the 2022 CHP at: 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) 2J3KL Stewardship Cod fishery - AMENDED July 15, 2022

New licence conditions are required and will be available soon on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).
