NOTICE TO FISH HARVESTERS

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) wishes to remind harvesters that ELOGs are mandatory for the 2025 fishing season for the following fisheries: Unit 1 Redfish, Lobster, and Snow crab for the full-time and mid-shore fleets.

To date in 2025, over 1,500 harvesters in the Newfoundland and Labrador Region are successfully using ELOGs with approximately 20,000 ELOG submissions. DFO acknowledges that some harvesters have expressed difficulties using ELOGs, and wishes to remind harvesters of the following resources available:

Guidance and technical support for ELOG Client Applications is provided by ELOG suppliers. ELOG provider websites provide training materials and videos to help harvesters understand their products better. Harvesters with questions on the use of the ELOG technology should consult with the Providers for product support.

DFO would also like to advise harvesters that for the 2025 fishing season in the Newfoundland and Labrador Region, inactive harvesters will not be required to purchase an ELOG. The Department will follow up with further information on how to confirm inactivity.

DFO advises harvesters that Lobster Fishing Area 14A will close at 2000 hours on June 21, 2025.

Fish harvesters are reminded that all fishing gear must be removed from the water by closing time.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-052 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-073 will come into force on May 31, 2025.

DFO advises that the fixed gear herring (gillnet/trap) fisheries for White Bay, Notre Dame Bay, Bonavista Bay, Trinity Bay, Conception Bay, the Southern Shore and St. Mary's Bay, (Herring Fishing Areas 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) will close at 2000 hours on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-066 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-072 will come into force on May 31, 2025.

DFO advises that the Emerging Sea Cucumber fishery in NAFO Divisions 3LNO will open at 0600 hours on Sunday June 1, 2025 to permit holders.

License conditions will become available in the DFO National Online Licensing System (NOLS) in advance of the planned fishing dates that permit-holders have submitted to the Department.

Permit holders are also reminded that completion of assigned survey blocks is a condition of licence, and that 100% at-sea observer coverage is also required.

DFO advises that the Whelk fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will open at 0600 hours on Sunday, June 1, 2025 and close at 2000 hours on Friday, October 31, 2025.

Fish harvesters are advised that licence conditions are available on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

DFO advises that the Herring fixed gear fishery (trap, gillnet, bar seine - including modified bar seine known as "tuck seine") in all of Herring Fishing Area 13 will close at 2000 hours May 27, 2025.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2025-045 has been revoked and Variation Order 2025-066 will come into force at 1800 hours on May 27, 2025.

DFO advises fish harvesters that the opening date for the 2025 NL commercial Eel fishery in coastal waters is June 1, 2025.

Licences and conditions are available through DFO’s National On-line Licencing System and the site location conditions must be obtained from the DFO Detachment offices.

The eel fishery will close on October 31, 2025.

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut fishery in NAFO sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will reopen at 0600 hours on May 24, 2025.

DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the incidental catch of Cod exceeds the established protocols.

DFO advises that the 3NOP portion of the Industry-DFO Longline Survey Program for 3NOPs4VWX5Zc Atlantic halibut will open to NL-based participants (Vessel Class A282) on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 0600 hours.
