DFO would like to advise Licence holders for the Unit 1 Redfish fishery (vessels less than 65 feet) for the inshore mobile gear fleet and the Estuary and Gulf shrimp fleet that an incorrect link for the electronic logbooks (ELOGs) was included in their Conditions of Licence.  Amended Conditions of Licence are now available through the National Online Licensing System with the correct link below:   Qualified electronic logbooks (ELOG) client applications

Unit 1 Redfish Opening for NL based harvesters with Reserve Allocation

DFO advises the Unit 1 Redfish fishery (vessels less than 65 feet) will open to NL based harvesters with Reserve Allocation in Tranche 2 for the following vessel classes C420, C434, and C435.  The fishery will open at 0600 hours on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, and will close 2400 hours on December 31, 2024.

DFO also advises that a NEW schedule 16A for providing Daily Hail Reports for the Unit 1 Inshore Redfish commercial fishery is available on DFO’s website at: Schedule 16A: DFO approved format

These reports are required to be submitted by email to DFO.Hails65-rapport65.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca .

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-279 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-281 comes into effect on October 23, 2024.

Hail Requirements for Unit 1 Redfish Fishery

DFO would like to remind licence holders when fishing Unit 1 Redfish, as per your conditions of licence, you are required to hail-out at least three hours before leaving port and every day when fishing longer than 24 hours.  You are required to hail using Schedule 16A approved format.  

Hail information must be submitted by email to DFO.Hails65-rapport65.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca

Schedule 16A can be found on the DFO’s website at Schedule 16A: DFO approved format (dfo-mpo.gc.ca) .

DFO would also like to remind licence holders that the use of electronic logbooks (ELOGs) is mandatory for this fishery.

Reminder of inshore Northern cod Authorized Fishing Areas

Effective at 0600 hours on Saturday, October 19, Northern cod inshore harvesters (vessel classes A295, A296, and A292) will be authorized to fish throughout NAFO Divisions 2J3KL as per the CHP.

There is approximately 150 t remaining for 3KL-based harvesters, and 40 t remaining for 2J-based harvesters. The fishery will be closely monitored to ensure the total harvest remains within the inshore fleet allocations, and a closure may occur with limited notice.

The Department prioritizes safety at sea. If a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-276 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-280 comes into effect on October 19, 2024.

4RST ATLANTIC HALIBUT – FOURTH SEASONAL OPENING DATE FOR THE NL INSHORE FIXED-GEAR FLEET

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in Period 4, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, October 14, 2024. This fishery is open to Vessel class A291 and will close at 2000 hours on November 3, 2024.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-270 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-278 comes into effect on October 11, 2024.

Reopening of the inshore Northern cod fishery for 3KL-based harvesters and 2J-based season extension

DFO advises that the 2J3KL Northern cod fishery will re-open for 3KL-based inshore harvesters to fish in NAFO Divisions 3KL on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 0600 hours for vessel classes A295, A296 and A283.

There is approximately 180 t remaining for 3KL-based harvesters. The fishery will be closely monitored to ensure the total harvest remains within the 3KL-based inshore fleet allocation, and a closure may occur with limited notice.

DFO remains committed to safety at sea and harvesters are reminded to closely monitor marine forecasts. If a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety concerns, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.

Harvesters are reminded that you are not authorized to set gear prior to the fishery opening.

DFO also advises that the season for the 2J-based inshore fleet, vessel class A292, will be extended to Saturday, October 26 at 1800 hours, and new conditions will be available soon.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Orders 2024-273 and 2024-274 have been revoked and Variation Orders 2024-276 and 2024-277 come into effect on October 10, 2024.

There is approximately 250 t remaining for 3KL-based harvesters.

Harvesters are reminded that you are not authorized to set gear prior to the fishery opening.

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut fishery in NAFO Division 4R for Quebec-based vessel classes A722, A725, A774, A776, A791, A793, A819, A843, A861 and A855 will close at 2359 hours ADT on September 27, 2024.

Correction: Closure of the inshore Northern cod Fishery for 3KL-based fixed-gear harvesters

DFO advises harvesters that 2J3KL Northern cod fishery will close for 3KL-based inshore fixed-gear harvesters in NAFO Divisions 2J3KL on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 1800 hours for vessel classes A295, A296 and A283. This closure is necessary as landings are approaching the 3KL-based allocation (12,057 t).

Please note: Previous notice referenced the entire 2J3KL inshore fleet allocation (15,071 t).

DFO also advises that as per the CHP, 2J-based inshore fixed gear harvesters, vessel class A292, will not be authorized to fish in NAFO Divisions 3KL as of Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 1800 hours, and are restricted to fishing in NAFO Division 2J. 

The Department prioritizes safety at sea. If a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.
