DFO advises that the directed Cod fishery in NAFO Sub-division 3Ps units d, e, f, g, and h will open to all fleets at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 15, 2022.

DFO advises that the retention of Atlantic halibut bycatch by mobile-gear vessels less than 65 feet directing for cod in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps is permitted. By-catch provisions are outlined in harvesters Groundfish General Licence Conditions.

Inshore mobile-gear harvesters are reminded that as outlined in their conditions of licence, all cod caught, whether from directed catch or by-catch, will be charged against the harvester's IQ or harvesting cap for their licence in 3Ps. Once a harvester has caught their cod IQ or harvesting cap, whether it is from directed fishing or as by-catch, the harvester must cease fishing for all species of groundfish in 3Ps for the remainder of the year.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2021-308 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-056 comes into effect on May 14, 2022.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announces an interim Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for the Atlantic halibut and Greenland halibut fisheries in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Divisions 4RST.

4RST Atlantic halibut

An interim TAC of 858 t for Atlantic halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final fleet allocations will be provided.

4RST Greenland Halibut

An interim TAC of 1,519 t for Greenland halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final allocations will be provided.

2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut opening

DFO advises that the 2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery will open at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 15th, 2022 for vessel class C175 and closes on May 29, 2022.

Conditions of license are available through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

As per your 2022 conditions of license, a daily hail is required. Hails must be sent to Hails65@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

Details on the Conservation Harvesting Plan for MG Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery can be found at: 2022 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP) NAFO area 2 + divisions 3KLMNO groundfish fishery mobile gear fleet.

Little Harbour Deep Head to Cape St. John: May 15, 2022 - July 3, 2022

Cape St. John to North Head: May 15, 2022 - July 3, 2022

North Head to Cape Freels: May 28, 2022 - July 16, 2022

Note all opening times are 0600 hours, and closing times are 2000 hours.

Atlantic Halibut Fishery for the Inshore Fixed-Gear Fleet in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps

DFO advises that the directed fishery for Atlantic halibut in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will open to the inshore fixed - gear  fleet (fixed-gear vessels less than 65 feet - Vessel Classes A251, A254, A257, A260, A263, A266, A269, A272, A275, and A279) at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 1, 2022. 

Participants in this fishery will be authorized to fish in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps, including east of Boxey Point and in water depths less than 50 fathoms, and will have weekly catch limits for Atlantic halibut. Provisions for this fishery are outlined in the species-specific and Groundfish General Licence Conditions, which are available through the National Online Licencing System (NOLS). 

Harvesters are reminded that as outlined in their conditions of licence, all cod caught, whether from directed catch or by-catch, will be charged against the harvester's Individual Quota (IQ) or harvesting cap for their licence in 3Ps. Once a harvester has caught their cod IQ or harvesting cap, whether it is from directed fishing or as by-catch, the harvester must cease fishing for all species of groundfish in 3Ps for the remainder of the year. 

Inshore fixed-gear harvesters are further reminded that as per conditions of licence, the daily by-catch limit of cod when directing for Atlantic halibut in 3Ps is limited to 10 per cent or 200 pounds round weight, whichever is greater. DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the by-catch of cod exceeds the established protocols.

DFO will closely monitor catches from this fishery. Once the available fleet allocation of Atlantic halibut is reached, the fishery will close to the inshore fixed-gear fleet and further retention of Atlantic halibut, including as bycatch in other fisheries, will be prohibited.
