DFO advises that the Inshore fishery in NAFO Divisions 3NO for Skate, Monkfish and Hake for vessels using Gillnets will open on May 18, 2022 at 0600 hrs.

This applies to the following vessel classes:  A250, A253, A256, A259, A262, A265, A268, and A271.

Licence conditions can be obtained by emailing Terri Healey at Terri.Healey@dfo-mpo.gc.ca with subject line: Skate, Monkfish & Hake Conditions.

Fish harvesters are reminded that all licence holders are required to provide a Daily Report of your fishing activity.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2021-306 has been revoked and Variation Order 2022-058 comes into effect on May 17, 2022.

2022 Expression of Interest Greenland Halibut (Turbot) for NAFO Divisions 2+3K and 3LMNO

DFO advises harvesters who want to participate in the 2022 <65' fixed gear fishery for Greenland Halibut (turbot) in 2+3K or 3LMNO, that they must submit their expression of interest to Fisheries and Oceans by 5 P.M., Sunday, May 29, 2022.

For 2022, NAFO division 2+3K will be managed using permits. The permit amount will be 45,000 lbs round weight. The tentative opening for this fishery will be June 15, 2022, and the permit will remain valid for 6 weeks. 

A subsequent draw may be conducted for area 2+3K in order to harvest any quota that was not taken during the initial permit period. All expressions of interests will be automatically included in the draw unless otherwise indicated in the expression of interest. Please write "decline draw" in your e-mail if you do not wish to have your name included.

For 2022, NAFO division 3LMNO will be managed by trip limits. The trip limits for 3LMNO will be 50,000 lbs (round weight). The tentative opening for this fishery will be June 1, 2022, and will remain open until the quota has been taken.

Fish harvesters are required to email their Expression of Interest to Resource Management at Terri.Healey@dfo-mpo.gc.ca

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

Inshore Fixed-Gear Fishery for Cod in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps

DFO advises that the directed Cod fishery in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps will open to inshore fixed gear fleets at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 15, 2022.

DFO advises that the retention of Atlantic halibut bycatch by fixed-gear vessels less than 65 feet directing for cod in NAFO Sub-Division 3Ps is permitted. By-catch provisions are outlined in harvesters Groundfish General Licence Conditions.

DFO wishes to remind inshore fixed-gear harvesters that as outlined in their conditions of licence, all cod caught, whether from directed catch or by-catch, will be charged against the harvester's IQ for their licence in 3Ps. Once a harvester has caught their cod IQ, whether it is a result of directed fishing or as by-catch, the harvester must cease fishing for all species of groundfish in 3Ps for the remainder of the year.

DFO will closely monitor landings from the directed 3Ps cod fishery. This fishery may close to the individual inshore fixed-gear fleets once they reach their respective fleet allocations, and will close to the entire inshore fixed-gear sector once the sector's allocation is reached.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announces an interim Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for the Atlantic halibut and Greenland halibut fisheries in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Divisions 4RST.

4RST Atlantic halibut

An interim TAC of 858 t for Atlantic halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final fleet allocations will be provided.

4RST Greenland Halibut

An interim TAC of 1,519 t for Greenland halibut is established and allocated in accordance with established fleet shares. Once a decision on the 2022-23 TAC is confirmed for this fishery, final allocations will be provided.

2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut opening

DFO advises that the 2+3KLMNO Mobile Gear Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery will open at 0600 hours on Sunday, May 15th, 2022 for vessel class C175 and closes on May 29, 2022.

Conditions of license are available through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS).

As per your 2022 conditions of license, a daily hail is required. Hails must be sent to Hails65@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

DFO advises that the Atlantic halibut fishery in NAFO sub-Division 3Pn, for vessels less than 65 feet using hook and line gear, will reopen at 0600 hours on May 11, 2022.

DFO will monitor fishing activity and will close the fishery if the incidental catch of Cod exceeds the established protocols.
