4RST ATLANTIC HALIBUT – FIRST SEASONAL OPENING DATE FOR THE NL INSHORE FIXED-GEAR FLEET

DFO advises that the Atlantic Halibut hook and line (long line) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST, for fixed gear vessels less than 65 feet based in Western NL and Southern Labrador that elected to fish in Period 1, will open at 0600 hours on Monday, June 10, 2024. This fishery is open to vessel class A285 and will close at 2000 hours on June 23, 2024.

DFO reminds fish harvesters that logbooks for this fishery are mandatory and must be completed in full and submitted as per the conditions of licence.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-074 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-075 comes into effect on June 7, 2024.

DFO advises that the fishery for Atlantic Halibut in NAFO Division 3NO, for vessel class A353 (Maritimes) using longline will open on Thursday June 6, 2024 at 0600 hours. 

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-066 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-074 comes into effect on June 5, 2024.

The reason for the closure is that the available harvesting cap for this fishery has been reached. Fish harvesters are reminded that all fishing gear must be removed from the water by closing time.

GREENLAND HALIBUT FISHERY OPENING IN NAFO DIVISION 4RST

DFO advises that the Greenland Halibut (turbot) fishery in NAFO Divisions 4RST will open in water depths 140 fathoms or greater, for fixed gear vessels (Vessel Class A284) less than 65 feet based in NAFO Divisions 2J4R3Pn, will open at 0600 hours on June 1, 2024.

By-catch limits are outlined in conditions.

4R3Pn based fixed gear groundfish harvesters who are not eligible under the Atlantic Halibut Sustainability Plan who wish to participate in the 4R Greenland Halibut (Turbot) fishery should submit a request through the National Online Licencing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2024-056 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-065 comes into effect on May 28, 2024.

Greenland Halibut (Turbot) Fixed Gear Fishery Opening for <65 ft Fleet in NAFO Divisions 3LMNO

DFO advises harvesters that the less than 65 ft. fixed gear Greenland Halibut (Turbot) fishery in NAFO Divisions 3LMNO will open on Monday, May 20, 2024 at 0600 hours.

Fish Harvesters are required to hail-out to an At Sea Observer Company 24 hours prior to leaving port.

License conditions will be available on the National Online Licensing System (NOLS) for those harvesters who submitted an Expression of Interest and are eligible to participate in the NAFO Divisions 3LMNO fixed gear Greenland halibut (Turbot) fishery.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-052 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-056 comes into effect on May 17, 2024.

Lumpfish Fishery Opening in parts of NAFO Division 3L

DFO wishes to advise harvesters that the Lumpfish fishery will open at 0600 hours on May 24, 2024 and close at 2000 hours on July 12, 2024 in the following NAFO Division 3L Lumpfish fishing area:

Conception Bay

Fishing for Lumpfish is authorized in water depths less than 25 fathoms.

Licence fees and licence conditions will soon be available on the National Online Licencing System (NOLS).
