Temporary Closure of Northern cod fishery for 3KL-based fixed-gear harvesters
DFO advises that the 2J3KL Northern cod fishery will close for 3KL-based inshore fixed-gear harvesters in NAFO Divisions 2J3KL on Monday, August 26 at 1600 hours for vessel classes A295 and A283.
Consistent with the 2024 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP), this closure is necessary as landings are approaching the allocation for the 3KL-based harvesters in the regular period (9,042 t) up to September 15.
DFO also advises that, as per the CHP, 2J-based inshore fixed gear harvesters (vessel class A292) are not authorized to fish in NAFO Divisions 3KL as of Monday, August 26 at 1600 hours, and are restricted to fishing in NAFO Division 2J until the 3KL fall period opens on September 15.
The Department prioritizes safety at sea and if a harvester is unable to retrieve their gear by the close time due to safety concerns, they are advised to contact their local C&P detachment.
The Department will make an announcement at a later date regarding reopening the fishery in 3KL for the fall period for all harvesters (regular season and those who opted for fall only). This reopening will be communicated in advance via a Notice to Fish Harvesters.
The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Variation Order 2024-166 has been revoked and Variation Order 2024-231 comes into effect on August 24, 2024.
