Mitigation Techniques

The Habitat Management Program has prepared Fact Sheets that describe the effects of certain activities on fish and fish habitats in Newfoundland and Labrador. These fact sheets also describe techniques which can be implemented to prevent or minimize negative effects on fish and fish habitat.

It is important to note that using the information and adopting the techniques described in these documents does not necessarily mean an activity undertaken in an area containing fish habitat will receive DFO or other regulatory approval. Contact your local area habitat biologist to discuss your specific project or undertaking.

What You Need To Do

If you are going to do a project in or around water, there are three steps that you should consider following to avoid impacts to fish and fish habitat.

  1. Effects of Silt on Fish and Fish Habitat
  2. Blasting - Fish and Fish Habitat Protection
  3. Ditching
  4. Temporary Fording Sites
  5. Forwarder Trails
  6. Filter Fabric
  7. Rock Check Dam
  8. Temporary Bridges
  9. Resource Road Construction

  14. Culvert Stabilization
  15. Storm Drain Outlets
  16. Highway Construction - Low Point Protection
  17. Temporary Settling (Detention) Basins

  19. Freshwater Salmonid Habitat Requirements
  20. Highway Construction / Upgrading - Infilling, Stabilization & No-grub Zones
  21. Freshwater Intake End-Of-Pipe Fish Screen
  22. Diamond Drilling - Mineral Exploration
  23. Stream Clean-up
  24. Timber Crib
  25. Water and Sewer Installation Stream Crossings
  26. Culvert Installations
